It really is the mirror that is rattling ... but how to cure it?

Featured Replies

Hi,

just starting with a quick presentations as I am new here:

we do have 2 Skoda's at present:

Ocatvia II 1,9 TDI PD Elegance

Fabia II 1,2 TSI Sport

and had a Fabia I and an Octavia I earlier. While I always found it quite natural to do repair and maintenance of my motorcycle myself, I always had the cars serviced at the dealer. However lately I got more interested in doing some mods and repairs on the cars as well. As I am lacking the experience with working on cars I was looking for a place where I could learn and if needed also ask. I came across this forum and am still amazed about the level of knowledge but also the kindness of people here sharing knowledge and helping each other out . Just by reading I am learning a lot am deeply grateful for this source of information…and it even may improve my language skills as English is not my first language…

A problem that was close to driving me crazy :@ was (and is) the rattling noise from the center of the dash (I thought) in the Octavia at about 1500 – 1900 rpm. I was so sure it came from there that pulled out the center air outlet twice and the glove compartment 3 times and applied a lot of foam rubber and numerous cable ties without success.

When I read from other people having had an apparently similar noise and found the mirror to be the source, I thought they must have a different sort of rattle in their car than what I have. However, when the rattle came and I touched the mirror the noise disappeared to my great amazement.

So I am glad to have located it finally, but has anyone possibly found a solution to it (I could not find anything). The mirror housing seems quite solid and my impression is that it is rather the whole mirror on its support that is rattling.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi, and welcome, I have the same issue as you, the annoying rattle. I too believed it to be eminating from the centre of the dash but evenetually tracked it down to the mirror. Infact it actually turns out to be the plastic surround that covers the rain sensor on my car. If I hold the case when the rattle starts, it immediately stops. The next step, for me, is to remove the surround and perhaps put some white tac in it and go from there. I know other people on here have had the mirror glass rattle inside its case. Hope this helps

Had similar with the mirror with my last Subaru and just squeezed some blu-tac into the join between the two halves of the mirror case. My Octy has done it too but I just squeezed the two halves of the mirror casing together and it's not done it since, if it returns it'll get the blu-tac treatment.

Set fire to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had this rattle too. After some investigation it was the surround for the rear view mirror. I stuck a piece of carboard into the gap between the plastic and the glass on one side - That was 4 years ago and its been there ever since with no more rattling!

Blu tac may work but dry out. The card (torn off the bumf in the handbook case) was to hand and worked instantly. If fact I'd forgotten about it until I read this.

I have the same issue, I just move the mirror slightly and touch wood its been ok for a few weeks so I won't change it or let the wife drive

This must be very common on Octys with auto-dimming mirrors. Mine did it too but fortunately I managed to persuade the dealer to replace it FOC a fortnight before the 3 yr warranty was up. The dealer had originally suggested it was caused by the plastic tube where the wires go to the mirror but even wedging that with a piece of card made no difference to the rattle. There were also signs that someone had previously had the mirror casing apart and I found holding the casing firmly together always stopped the noise for a short while. The replacement mirror doesn't rattle at all.

If it had been out of warranty I think I would have had a go at running a thin bead of clear silicone round where the two parts of the mirror casing fit together.

Hi,

thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts and experience  . I experimented a bit arround (moving the mirror slighttly out of position, pushing a plastic strip in the tiny gap at back of the mirror housing). Things have improved, but its not solved yet, so I'll continue trying.

Warranty or even goodwill is out of the question as the car is from 2007. I have not checked yet, but a mirror replacement might be too costly...

Hi again,

I now solved it finally :whew::rofl: , and thought I just report what I found and did for future reference.

In my case the glas is not loose in the casing and the rattle seemed more to come from the mirror as a whole. I touched also the little cable tube and the casing of the rain sensor, but they were not guilty.

Next challenge was how to get the mirror of without breaking something. I found this video (I know it's in russian :giggle: ) showing it:

After removing the mirror I first tried to bend the metallic clips so that they would apply more force when in place. That did not solve it. When experimenting further, I found that the mirror when slided in place (upwards) on the part glued to the screen can make a very slight "nodding" movement which I had not noticed before.

I pressed the mirror upwards and put a thin piece of plastic in the little gap and put it all back together.

No the rattling is gone!!!

I should mention that the front screen of the car had been replaced a while ago which may or may not have contributed.
