HELP. change brake fluid, Brakes now bad

Featured Replies

my octy mk1 has had its brake fluid changed as it was old and dirty but now there is no resistance in the pedal at all. when pressed the pedal will go straight to the floor, the brakes work but bad. Its not safe to drive.

Any ideas what to try next? They dont think there is any more air in the system, all 4 nipples were bled and the one on the master cylinder. im going to ask in a bit if he has bled the clutch.

:(

How were the brakes bled? did you use the "pump the pedal" method? if so you may of damaged the master cyl seals,to change the brake fluid you need to use a pressure bleeder,id try bleeding the calipers & master cyl & then the clutch using a pressure bleeder then try the car,if its no better you may need to replace the master cyl.

its at my work who are doing it. just told him to bleed the clutch aswell but ive just asked if they used a pressure bleeder, he said yes, then i asked if they have been pumping the pedal, he says yes

Don't bleed the clutch unless you really need to. They are a PITA.

There are TWO bleed nipples on the master cylinder that should be bled...

Just asked again and he hasnt used a pressure bleeder  only foot pump method. im going to ring a garage around the corner that we know and see if they will let us borrow theirs.

Easy fix there are 2 bleed nipples right under the brake fluid resevoir bleed these all will be good

There's been some good and bad results some have had to have a new master cylinder others just bled it the proper way and it worked

looks like they have knackered the master cylinder so replacing it.

thanks for the advice. i used the search function and told them about the 4 bleed nipples and the ones under master cylinder before they did it, i checked that they were using a pressure bleeder too which they said yes but the mechanic didnt. after pushing 4 litres of fluid through from front to back its made no difference.

Less of the head banging, its not good for u :giggle:

not again :wall:

hehe a good post is a good post.....

Think it was aimed at me lol

Most of the threads i found on the search didnt tell me anything more than i already knew, hence the new post for anything else to try but turns out they were telling porkies about the method and kill it :@ :'( :'(

The mysterious ways of changing the brake fluid. Amen!

Luize darling, don't hurry changing the master cylinder, because is fine ,was fine before changing the old fluid,so it is now, unless you poisoned it with the new fluid.

A propper bleeding will cure it!

LE: 4 litres of brake fluid?I get it...it's drunk!

lol trouble is on some occasions the seals become inverted

Err who?

People who think the seals get inverted I suspect. I'd like to see proof. Mine failed, but not because I bled it, that's for sure.

There's far too much scaremongering goes on before all avenues are explored.

got a call to come and get on sat. i have no idea what they have done but all seems fine now. im thinking they borrowed a pressure bleeder and done it right. brakes now feel top notch.

So like you said, the master cylinder hadnt gone, it was just due to wrong method leaving air in i think. :)

They got air in it and found the two nipples under resevoir, but dont want to admit it, grease monkey would have pumped it dry, i could still bleed all 4 corners but couldnt get brakes to work no matter how many times i bled mine.

Pleased your sorted and didnt get fleeced

Yeah im glad, this is why owner clubs are great because you find all the info you need and save a packet, without the info i would have said oh no and paid for a new one to be fitted.

Good stuff glad we could help. Ive certainly learned/saved alot on here. Im currently trying to undo a new balls up ive discovered in my steering rack....... Here we go again

Glad you got it sorted ok,at least with all that clean fluid through the system your brake fluid should be good for a few more years! :-)
