Looking at 99 SLX OCT TDI - What should I look out for!?

Featured Replies

I am going to test drive and very likely buy a 99 T reg Octavia SLX on Wednesday. Are there any things that any older and wiser Skoda owners and alert me to to look for?

The dealership says that it is the 110bhp version and is in very good condition for having 110000 miles. I am not scared off by the miles as it is the only 110 Octavia SLX that I have found in my price range. (around 3k)

any advice, much appreciated.

My Octy is identical but 5k lower miles, that I've had for less than 2yrs & 55k.

Thoroughly recommend this model my only minor gripes would no remote CL or rear wash wipe, definately not the best handling car in the world but the ride is good.

Drove a Volvo S60 D5 yesterday - rubbish boot, same performance & only really a better ride on very rough roads but it was a lot quieter. The mileage was under 70k but the inside felt worn.

Back to the Octavia - my only concerns would be that the oil had been changed regularly and that you're certain that the cambelt has been changed recently, think it's every 40k.

Look up Honest John's (www.honestjohn.co.uk) review of the car. Also there should be no exhaust smoke - I only ever see any in the headlights of the car behind when giving it some unecessary high revs. Honest John also reckons that the fuel injectors should be cx at around 90k on all VAG 1.9TDI to prevent uneven bore wear, which would probably, show itself as smoky exhaust?

Anybody know the cost to replace the injectors?

If it doesn't pull like a train in any gear from 2k revs then the turbo, air meter or pipes are very faulty, also make sure the aircon is producing plenty of cold air. A new turbo or compressor are NOT cheap.

Ideally it would also be a 1 owner since new or at least for the last few years. It should still be tight & drive like new if it's been looked after. I frequently drive new model Astra, old Focus, 307, Golf, Vectra & Mondeo cars but would still (and probably will) get another Octavia before any of these.

Hope that helps.

I had and sold one of these a while back - It is 110bhp and you get al the climatronic / CD / e/w all round luxuries. Mine was at 160k, and I got

If you are interested I'm after flogging mine W reg 1.9 TDI SLX Hatch, 106,000 miles from new Full Skoda Service History!

I'm getting a new Octy 11 and didn't want what dealer offered me, sorry to be cheeky but you have to try!!
