Internally cleaning an engine?

Featured Replies

Just noticed a post on another thread which mentioned an apparent issue with some VAG engines with regards to the intake valves getting coked up, resulting in a potentially expensive bill if the guy on there's experience was anything to go by!!

Anyone heard of this or got experience of it?

Also, if it IS the case, does anyone know the best way to avoid it? After a bit of googling, this product kept coming up: anyone heard or used it??...

The fsi suffers badly with coking, just look at the RS4. I've heard of sea foam not sure if it actually works never fully tried it my self.

The best sea foam is collected from a lukewarm sea on a semi-diurnal tide.

Mash a little Benthic Marine Algae gently into the foam, boil for 9 minutes and simmer for 47 days.

Then carefully apply to the windscreen wiper blades whilst chanting the 33rd OM riff, wearing full ceremonial robes.

This will transform the inside of your engine into a clean palace of engineering, where any hydrocarbon would be glad to be ignited.

So does that include my 2008 1.8t? (struggling to find someone to tell me if my motor is actually a tsi, fsi, tfsi, or any combination!)

Has it got a cam chain = TSI

Terraclean. Costs about £90 and benefits from being done every 50k miles.

still dont believe terraclean to be honest

Yes, it has.

So initially i'd presume my car may not suffer with this then, correct?

...but what's the difference between tsi, fsi and tfsi then?

If its coked uo do a search for BG44k (for petrol) BG244 (for diesel) This is the best stuff i have tried. Loads of users swear by it.

Does it not say on your engine cover?

(Or is it only the vRSs that get the fancy covers?)

I'll have to have a look, it might say, it's just all the paperwork that came with it has either tsi OR tfsi, which is where the confusion lies.

they are essentially the same, except the tsi has some revised parts, such as the hpfp cam follower.

unless its a 1.4 tsi,then its twincharged

TSI doesn't need to run on super (I think) TFSI does (well recommended).

So if you have a look in the petrol flap that might give you more ideas.

I don't recall reading about any of the petrol engines coking up, or any one else's petrol engines for that matter. I thought that was a diesel issue.

Back in the day of carb fuel systems you could trickle small amounts of water down the throat of the carb whilst at moderate revs. Only a little at a time mind you. The engine would bog down a bit during the process but the water turned instantly to superheated steam and cleaned all the valves and combustion chambers etc.

No such chance with modern engines though. How do you know your engine is coked? Surely if you are using good fuel there shouldn't be a problem?

This reminds me of the days when on a Saturday morning we used to take the heads off our (original) Minis and carefully re-seat the valves with hand tools and compounds. Today I wouldn't even take the engine cover off.

Fiddling with cars just isn't the same nowadays. :|

Having said that, I did strip out the interior of my octy on monday trying to find out where I might have a leak from, and despite the initial dismay that it'd be a ballache, it was actually quite fun, just like the good old days.

Also know a lot more about how my car is made now as well. :)

Runn on VPower if you are concerned.

the petrol engines do have the same issue,it is the downside to direct injection as the fuel doesnt run over the valves to clean them.

i though about getting the head cleaned out,but i dont think its worth it
