Towbars again

Featured Replies

I'm about to collect my Skoda Yeti 110 tdi SE, 1 year old. I need a towbar for my caravan. Does anyone know of a good towbar fitter in West Lothian area. My local Skoda garage are going to charge me £825 for detachable towbar with dedicated electrics. Not that fussy about it being detachable but don't want parking sensors going off.

Who ever you choose, do NOT let them use a splice in loom, but a proper plug-in extra loom, and ensure they are capable of reprogramming the car after fitting.

Yep, dedicated wiring is the way!

A fixed Witter tow bar, electrics and progamming £325 all in. Just need to tell them what sockets to fit ie single 7pin, twin 7pins or one 13pin same price.

Link to where that price is available might be useful for the OP.

RickT would had his done by MDS towbars from Rochdale in Lancashire, however if Bettysman looks at this link http://www.rightconnections.co.uk/distributors it shows all the towbar people who use 'Right connections' looms which do the job properly. But the nearest one to Livingston who advertises 'VEHICLE CODING AVAILABLE' is in Forfar which is a bit north of him.

Suggest he rings a few and asks "do you fit the dedicated loom- wired into the fuse box, and can you do the vehicle re-coding?"

or of course he could have an 'away day' to Lancashire !! (MDS are mobile btw with about 3 vans- they may do Scotland!!)

I was trying to edit my previous post but it kept coming up with error messages, so here's a new post;

This is where I had mine done, I realise this not in your area but they explained everything what/how they do it and I would recommend them.

MDS did mine. Witter detachable, dedicated wiring loom and re-coded. Highly recommended. Just over £500 as opposed to £825 at the dealers - no brainer.

Sounds good, did that include a detachable cover for the rear bumper cutout or just a small permanent opening?

No detachable cover - just the small cut-out opening.

But the yeti must be prepared for the tow, right?

I ask it because I bought a 1.6 Greenline, and the dealer told that this sprecific "green" model is not allowed to have a tow. Otherwise I would have order it when I bought it.

thanks for the reply's. I've had so much conflicting information about towbars and electrics. In the end local dealer are going to fit it themselves, dedicated electrics, detachable towbar, removable panel etc. I'm looking at it as a long term investment so will have to live with the high cost. And they can deal with any problems.

Picking up my black 110 SE today and getting the towbar fitted tomorrow.

Well done Bob. At least this way you know that if there is a problem then it falls into the dealers lap.

Having discussed this with WEG a few weeks ago they get the work done by Buchan towbars at Newbridge rather than doing it themselves.

Be aware that if you want split charging you will have to ask and pay extra for it. It's not standard.

Couldn't spend any more than I'm paying now. Had to advise my insurance company because it cost so much. WEG assured me they were doing the work, might take a run to Buchans to check.

Bob, if its not too privat, can you share how much does it cost?

Does anyone know about the possibility to fit a towbar on the Greenline version?

Thanks in advance

I would be embarrased to tell you how much and frightened the wife found out.

Well WEG always get Buchans to do mine ... and thats five cars and counting!

I've towed many thousands of miles with my Skodas with no issues ... including a windy trip to the North today!!! Happy caravanning ... sun is shining on our site, for now at least!

Where about are you Iain? I'm going up Dornoch next weekend.

Thank you all for the support. Didn't understand why the dealer said that it wasn't allowed to add a towbar on this green version.

Now that I think about it, maybe its a tax issue. The green version pays less tax because its good for the enviroment. The towbar is not considered green :giggle:

I will try to investigate a litle bit more, and maybe ask another dealer.

The Greenline model is 100% allowed to tow, I am getting a tow bar on mine....your dealer is talking rubbish....

Unless they have some special rules in Portugal, Chris.

Personally I think the dealer is talking rubbish!

Been there a couple of times, very nice site and area. But I'm biased as I'm from Aberdeen
