Bolero Questions

Featured Replies

Sorry. I know this has been covered a million times but I need a cuople of quick questions answering.

1. Do I need to disconnect the battery to change the stereo over (stream to bolero)?

2. I have bought a new gateway which starts 7N0 to replace my original. Are all the 7N0 versions compatible?

3. I'm going to put the head unit it now but not getting the car coded until next week. Will I be ok to leave it in without the power block connected? It won't drain the battery like that? (sounds stupid I know.)

No, dunno, very much doubt it. :)

1. No, but I'd recommend it;

2. I believe so;

3. By power block, I presume you mean the ISO connectors behind the HU? In which case, I don't know, but I doubt it.

Judging by that thread on the throttle possibly ballsing up if you disconnect the battery, i'm now very wary of doing that unless I have to until it's cleared up exactly what that's all about!!

Dunno if it's any different with new cars, but i've changed stereos on a ton of cars, some even rewiring the existing connections to fit specific iso blocks and I've never bothered disconnecting the battery before just swapping a headunit.

I don't generally disconnect the battery when swapping HU's or changing wiring behind the HU. I just advise 'best practice'.

If you were to inadvertently touch the wrong wires together while meddling, I hate to think what electronic components you could end up damaging!

I've obviously missed "that thread" on the throttle problems and, as I have disconnected the battery several times without any issues, won't be looking for it.

However, posting a link to it would make it easier for everyone to find and read...

Touché!

Thanks guys. I fitted it as described above and have no issues. Just waiting to get the gateway coded.

As for the throttle body. What nobody in the other thread seemed to mention is that the tb can be reset in vcds after a battery disconnection but it will reset itself anyway under normal driving conditions. This is the way it was on the mkiv golf I had anyway.

Yeah, fair enough, I think there's probably quite a few things that are 'best practice' that a lot of us home mechanics tend to skip! lol

Yup, apologies, thought i'd included a link on the post but obviously forgot! :)

...but I notice you didn't do it either, ya plum duff! :D Touché!

Hmmm, interesting...

Link to what (in this thread)? Have I missed something?

With regard to best practice, the debate on how long to leave the battery disconnected before meddling with the airbags is a great one where 'best practice' and erring on the side of caution conflicts hotly with the 'get it done quickly' brigade...

I can't say that I have noticed any problems with the throttle after disconnecting the battery (Octavia II pre-FL) but I'm going to give the throttle body rest a go with VCDS late and see if it makes any difference.

When I've done it, I'll report back... Hopefully.
