Biggest day in the Scout's life!

Featured Replies

Dropped my Scout off this morning for it's biggest service yet at Pulman VW in Durham!

2008 (08) PD140 8V DPF TDi - 34,000 miles, registered August 2008, set to fixed intervals.

4 Year Major Service - £100 (discounted through the £299 2x service plan +£100 worth of vouchers so £100/service)

Cambelt - £254

Waterpump - £68

Haldex oil change - £68

MOT - £19.50

Total - £509.50.

Ouch!

I'm just waiting for the usual midday call now to tell me it needs wiper blades, air con service or anything else they can try and flog me!

Is that with or without the VAT?

4 years? Is the brake fluid covered under "Major" if so thats a good deal.

My last dealer service at 60kmiles came with a very colourfull printout - I scored all greens!

That's including VAT.

Just had the call! Front pads 20% worn but the discs are "corroded, which might effect the brake balance test for the MOT".

"Should we replace the discs and pads sir? £290"

Erm, no thanks!

The brake fluid was done last year at the three year mark so I don't think it is included / being done.

That'll make an interesting comparison against my local VW / Audi / Seat / Skoda specialist tomorrow...

2007 Octy II 4x4 2.0 PD 140 DPF 8v TDi, 37,000 miles, first registered March 2007, set to variable intervals.

I'm a bit late with a few bits but I've been quoted

Major Service - £163 all in

Cambelt - £190 all in

Waterpump - £30 ish (need to check)

Haldex oil change - £50 ish (need to check)

Total - £430 ish all in.

That is good value, especially when you consider I only paid £100 for the major service.

Had it not been discounted through the service plan I have the major service would have been £249 (Skoda National Pricing).

That would take my bill up to £659, a whopping £229 more than your indy quote.

I appreciate that there are different variations of a 'major' service but the one I'm having done involves fuel filter, air filter and pollen filter as well as the usual suspects:

Major service

(Every 24 months/20,000 miles)

This includes:

  • Oil & filter change (fully synthetic oil)
  • Replace pollen filter (where fitted)
  • Vehicle inspection and report**
  • Replace air filter
  • Spark plugs (petrol engine) or fuel filter (diesel engine)
  • Remove wheels and check brakes
  • Check/adjust tension of all drive belts
  • Check/replenish gearbox oil (where applicable)
  • Check/replenish final drive oil (where applicable)
  • Full vehicle road test***
  • Vehicle and software enhancements from ŠKODA's database
  • Check suspension system
  • Check heating/air con operation
  • Diagnostic check including report
  • Re-set service interval display
  • Wash and vacuum
  • ŠKODA stamp in service book

What are they called?

What are they called?

Is the specalist in Sheffield?

I'm using Tec-Nick Autos on Duchess Rd Sheffield S2.

It's a guy called Nick Crouch who, if I recall correctly, was an Audi main dealer master tech for 11 years and has recently set his own business up tucked away in a small unit just off Queens Road.

I was wary at first but having had a chat to him and his colleague both seemed to be sound blokes who knew thier stuff and they always seem to have lots of golfs and Audi's in and out.

I had the Fabia serviced by him a month or so ago and so far all has been fine so I've taken the plunge wth the Octavia as well. I'll let you know how I've got on when I collect it later today.

OK - well I collected it this evening and total was £437 but excluded the haldex change as Nick's filler pipe didn't fit properly and he didnt want to leave it with no oil while he waits for a new one from Audi. So there is a few quid more to go on yet. Some of the increase in price is due to my 'rounding' of the figures and my ommission of the cost of coolant given the water pump was changed...

I'll get the Haldex oil changed as soon as the pipe arrives but so far the car feels good and it was still cheaper than the local dealer.

He also checked a bulb out warning I have on the dash even though none are out. It's as I expected and showing as a headlight levelling motor fault in both lights and I'm wondering whether this is because I have an aftermarket 50w non-canbus HID kit in them coded as Xenon without shutters and no cold diagnostics but the car has no self leveling (and hence only two wire levelling motors not three wire ones)... Octimark - as a VCDS owner would you happen to know if this would be resolved by changing the xenon without shutter coding back to standard halogen whilst keeping the cold diagnostics off?

The only down side was that he's spotted a small split in a CV joint gaiter that'll need doing at some stage...

Skomaz:

I would think you could use VCDS to get around the problem but I dont have the level of understanding or knowledge. I know of similar situations (such as changing coding when using larger injectors to refine the mpg figures which is the same kind of roundabout way of "tricking" the system).

If some one else knows the solution and give provide a walk through i'm happy to give it a try for you but it would be totally at your risk as i've said I dont have much expertise when it comes to vag-com (sorry).

A few good hard stops should burnish the rotors clean. Who changes pads wit 20% worn?

Just had discs and pads done of my 08 scout due to warped discs. However mine is at 78k so yours should last a bit yet.

I should have said it was the 'inner' disc that was corroded. Looking through the alloy the outer disc looks OK.

When I'm in my scruff I'll have a clamber underneath for a proper look...

Ok sound - I'll maybe check further with sopmeone like Mike Holroyd and see what he reckons...

I'm sure Mike can shed some light on it for you.

Went to try and find this guy this week but couldnt find him and ended up at AutoWorks (0114 272 3410). Must be behind his unit or something. They gave me a decent quote so i've used them instead. Will post up how it went when I get the car back.

If you were at Autoworks you were probably a couple of hundred yards away - he's in an old yard up the side of Shaws Ironmongers. Doesn't look pretty but is very functional if you get my drift...
