Fuel gauge not showing full when it is

Featured Replies

Hi all I did do a search but could not find anything on this problem

After filling the tank I set off to find the needle was not showing full so I thoght maybe I had not filled it right up so next time I made sure it was full and again its not showing full

Anyone else had this?

2WD?

2.0 tdi 170se front wheel drive

Might well be a faulty sender, or may just be stuck

The VW van at work is the same and its a 61 reg with only 6000 miles, it shows 3 bars off full.

I take it they dont no why?

There is a patch for the tables driving the fuel gauge - might ask the dealer to reprogram ?

Tried that once in my Greenline because I refilled it with the engine running. I just drove it untill the tank was half empty and refilled again (this time with the engine off!) - problem solved. Don´t understand why since I have refilled cars with engine running before without problems.

It's probably the software in the instrument pack. There's likely to be software to help stop the needle swinging about, and damp the needle movement. It probably overrides this when you fill up but only recognises a fill up if you don't fill with the engine running.

Why would you fill with the engine running anyway?

Because it was freezing, the heat was on and my little daughter was sleeping on the backseat :) Another situation could be that you want to avoid starting and stopping the engine when the engine is cold.
