Hi all,

This is my 2nd post on this forum (please see my post in the 'newbie' section)

We have just bought a 2001 Y reg Skoda Fabia Classic (1.4)

It has a knocking/creaking noise which we think is coming from the front. We have just come back from having a drive and my husband was moving the steering wheel from left to right while stationary. What could this be and how soon should this be repaired.

strut top mounts cost £15 plus 1 hour labour. probably same for other parts.

£65-90 all in i expect

Just to also ad it doesn't make any knocking or creaking noises going over bumps!

to me that would be strut top mounts. its a bearing that goes on top of the front springs, as you turn the wheel the spring turns aswell of course, so at top to allow it to rotate is a rubber bound bearing. As you turn the wheel does it make a thud thud thud, or bong bong noise.

Easy to diagnose: if he looks above front wheel at spring as you turn the wheel, he will see it turn, if its these mounts or just one, then one of the springs will turn in a jerky/jumpy fashion rather that smooth.

Not much of an update but we are taking the Fabia to our mechanic after work tomorrow.

We have been out in it a few times and the more we think about it we have kind of drawn a blank as we cannot remember it making any knocking or creaking noises on the way home from buying it last week.

Its had a lot of work down on it mechanically with its previous owner and I can't help thinking when they p/x'd it someone could have possibly sprayed some WD40 on whatever it making these noises.

We used to have a Ford Puma and that have top strut mount problems and whenever we went over speed bumps or pot holes it used to make 'that' noise and this car doesn't do the same!

Sorry for the essay, I am a born worrier and the more I think about it I always come up with a horrible conclusion!

strut top mounts dont make noises on bumps, only when wheels are being turned.

Had another thought.... When we went to our mechanic last week for a new rad we were just leaving and as a 'woman driver' I didn't see a slope which was about a foot drop I went down it and I'm now convinced I've cracked someone underneath!! :(

The knocking/creaking noise was down to me going down the steep drop last week! Oops!

Our mechanic had a look it was something to do with the cradle the engine sits in. He tightened it up and problem solved. We have a lovely quiet car again.

Mechanic didn't even charge us!
