1.8 Oil change DIY?

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been done before and hopefully this can be answered but is the oil and filter on a 1.8 TSI a simple DIY job or is it best left to a garage .... got a 4 litre can of Mobil 1 free so would consider doing it myself

Thanks

It's easy enough if you have a trolley jack and a pair of axel stands.

The longest bit is removing the plastic undertray to gain access to the sump plug.

The oil filter is accessed through the bonnet but can be fiddly.

Thanks...

Undertray means its the garage then....bummer certainly not Skoda either!

Do these undertrays serve any purpose other than making a DIY oil change awkward?

I believe the Octavia is like my Fabia - you only need a Torx spanner, and it's a 5 min job, if that!

Keep twigs and other debris away from the pipework and sump? ;)

You will probably need a 19mm socket for the sump plug, if you arnt sure what you are doing then dont do it as a few things can go wrong such as over or under torquing the plug or filter or if the filter is a paper element sometimes the rubber seals can be fiddly.

It's an easy enough job, but I'd say invest in a good torque wrench first, one with a suitable low range for what you'll need. It'll be cheap compared with what a garage charges for labour, and a good tool will pay for itself time and time again.

Some people reuse the old sump plug & washer, but I'd recommend using a new set. Cheap enough from the dealer.

Primarly noise reduction but also aerodynamics

Thanks... booked her it for the job local garage

seems £50 with oil a good deal, dealer wants £129???

You do get a little more for your £129.

It depends how important a diagnostic check, pollen filter, wash and vac and Skoda stamp in the service book is to you...

  • Oil & filter change (fully synthetic oil)
  • Vehicle inspection test and report**
  • Full vehicle road test***
  • Vehicle and software enhancements from ŠKODA's database
  • Replace pollen filter (where required)
  • Diagnostic check including report
  • Re-set service interval display
  • Wash and vacuum
  • ŠKODA stamp in service book

£129

Yeah if you cant do these checks and service extras yourself then its worth the extra money atleast you will know you will get the correct oil and genuine filters, but if you have a remap the last thing you want is a software update BMW did that to my 320d on a service and I had to pay turbopacs £50 to reflash the ECU!
