Shark STS remap Unit.... have a shark remap withou travelling to get it done

Featured Replies

Hi, this unit came with a Shark remapped car that I bought earlier this year, but have now sold. I'm now buying a revo'd KO4 octy Vrs, so won't be needing this now.

It was used on a fabia vrs 1.9tdi, I'm not sure what other cars the unit may work with.

I have the receipt for the unit and the box etc, and can provide the registration of the vehicle it was used on.

You will need to buy a new map from shark, but obviously won't need to travel to see them to get it. You can also then switch between standard and remapped at will.

I think the last couple of these have gone for £95 delivered, so £80 collected from Bristol or £95 delivered.

Thanks for looking

Any idea how much a new map would be? Cheers.

Hi

No, why do you ask?

How do you upload the new map?

Sorry mate, wasnt clear in that last msg.

Just I know that if the car hasnt had the std map put back on that the units are locked to the car that the map was created for.

As far as I know the shark units will work on most vag group cars. Cant say about other manufacturers but Im sure they cover most popular cars available.

How do you upload the new map?

You just connect the sts to your pc/laptop and Copy the file over. Takes a few mins tops.

It's emailed to you by Shark.

Basically, you'd need to download some software which is like a 'control panel' for the STS device.

Connect the STS unit to your PC and contact Shark who can then reset it.

Connect the STS unit to the OBD port in your car - follow some simple instructions and in effect 'save a copy' of you cars standard map.

Go back indoors, connect the unit to your pc again and contact shark.

Shark then email your map(s) which you 'copy' to the sts unit

go back outside to the car and use the STS to 'copy' the new map to the car.

It's basically very easy.

Regarding units being locked to a car, this is is not entirely true. Superchips started saying this because with their 'Blu-fin' (just a different type of sts type unit) you get a years free 'change of map' if you change your car. So you buy the blu-fin unit and after 6 months you changed your car, you were supposed to reset the map on the car you were selling to standard so that you could then get another map for the new car. Long Story Short, I had 3 cars in 1 year with the blu-fin and each time I phoned up they asked me if I had reset the car to standard map. When I sold car 2 I forgot to put the standard map back on but just said I had to the guy at superchips and he reset it and off I went to get Map 3 - in this case I effectively had two maps for the price of one.

The situation with Shark is totally different, they don't offer free maps in the first 12 months, so they have nothing to lose in resetting an STS unit (remotely via internet) - as they get to sell it's new owner a new MAP. Let's be honest, the map is where the money is, in the sense that they've paid all their development costs already and, as it's their own work, I doubt they have to pay a royalty on each programme sold.

Hope that all makes sense. In effect, It's in Sharks interest to reset it for the new owner as they sell a map they otherwise might not have done

Ye does make sense, just thought Id mention it incase you wasnt sure. Didnt want you selling it then having someone want to send it you back thats all.

They are a good bit of kit. Ive used one myself.

Yes cheers, I'm fairly sure Shark would need to reset it regardless of whether the standard map had been returned to the car or not, on the basis that you read a file from your car that goes back to the tuner before they send you a new map. So the unit remains linked to your car until it's 'reset'.

To 'Reset' an STS type unit is easy for the tuner (whoever they are) - they just need you to have it connected to your PC, with your PC on line and a specific option selected in their 'control panel' software that you've loaded onto your PC.

I'm probably making this sound harder than it is, it's a bit like resetting an IPOD to factory settings so you can start again - except it's done remotely for you by the tuner.

I had one STS that hadnt had the std file put back on the car and that one needed flashing by shark like you say but I then got another sts unit that had the std map returned to the car and it allowed me to reset the unit myself. I then just copied the tuned file to the sts myself and loaded it to my car. Took half hour max.

And I bet they were quite happy to flash it as you bought a new map ?

makes good business sense, I'd spend 5 mins doing a reflash if someone was going to spend £300 on a map too!

Shame this system doesnt work with the CR170

Just to clarify, the car does need to be set back to standard otherwise the unit is locked to the car. We can't reset them ourselves, they have to go back to the manufacturer and be reset for which there is an associated cost.

so does that render this unit useless? im confused

Should be ok as he had returned the car to stock when sold.

It was just Sko-with-go's interpretation of Sharks policy was wrong, thats all. Ben at Shark has now clarified the correct procedure above. :)
