Interim Service - Garage or Self?

Featured Replies

hi guys

got an interim service due this month, last august had full service and cambelt done so im assuming its just inspection and oil change

im in 2 minds whether to do it my self or take it to a garage, Awesome charge £99 for this plus the stamp in the service book

or can i get it done cheaper from say a kwik fit type place with stamp?

any advice?

thanks

You can get it done cheaper at most chains, but you won't necessarily know what they put in. Wrong oil is very bad for a PD engine and increases your chance of camlobe wear (less common on the PD130, but still possible). I've done the last two myself with a Pela extractor, now I know what I'm doing, the last one took about 30 minutes at the roadside. No official stamp in the book, but I've filled it out with a list of parts used and the milage myself so the history is still intact, so the type of owner I'm likely to be selling mine to (if ever) will be more than happy with that I'm sure. Think the last one I did a few weeks ago cost me about £62 in parts, I did the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, and picked up a load of trim clips as well, so for just the oil and oil filter I wouldn't be surprised if it's less than £45.

edit - just happened to find the envelope on my desk that I scribbled prices on, would be sub £30.

5L Quantum Platinum 505.01 oil - £26.39

VAG oil filter - £2.95

If you mean Oil change rather than actually a 'service', or anything that resembles a Service.

then get a Garage to do any oil change if you can not.

Supply the Oil & Filter & watch them put in the Oil to your car,

rather than in the boot of one of theirs.

Do not trust that to kwik flik dancers.

Unless you can watch like a hawk through that glass & see what they do. JMO & JME.

If you want to and can service a car,

then, get those wheels off & check your Brakes (shoes), tyre presures,

grease your Hinges, Top up your washer bottle, check your Air Fiter, just chack and look,

because thats all anyone else will do for you, & they take money for that.

Replace parts as required now and keep all reciepts since the car is in its 6th year.

More impressive to a future Buyer than a 'Kwik Fit' Service stamp i would have thought.

Hopefully they will know the difference between shoes and pads mind.

If you can DIY, then fine, if not leave it to someone who can, even better would be to get a mechanic to watch you do the work, it's the best way to learn.

Just remember a service is more than just an oil and filter change!

i need a Pela extractor in my life :)

i take it with this you don't need to change the sump nut/washer?

oil change work not a problem, i reckon il save myself some money this year and do it my self and keep the receipts

the age old question though with the stamp in the book, is it worth paying extra just for peace of mind when it comes time to sell the car?

will pop into TPS for the oil and filter i think

Pads (shoes) is a reference to 'no particular vehicle', & not the OP's one,

it a generalisation about getting cars serviced correctly.

as many places will not bother their back end when there are rear calipers with 'Pads'

but also an inner drum with 'Shoes' for the Hand Brake, to check those 'shoes'.

! but you knew that, i am sure!

Nope, you don't remove it. I'll get the oil dropped properly in a couple of services time anyway as it'll be due a cambelt change, so I'll get the whole lot done and a full service at my local independent, and will probably get some services done this way in future, but the Pela makes DIYing a lot easier for me (my driveway is sloped so I don't like being under the car, and the slope makes it difficult to tell how much oil you're putting in afterwards, I can do it on the flat road with the Pela much safer than lying under the car at the roadside).

Pela (or similar - ours is screwfix) is great, but you do need to measure that you've got all the oil out. The tube can bend up so we put a thinner tube inside the original. Saves all the worries about stripping threads and you can suck out all that left in the filter housing.

will look into the pela, i see sealey one that looks similar, re-badged?

Just do it yourself, couldn't be easier, and get a service stamp from Vista Print, they are dead cheap. This is what I do and people are always happy to see stamps in the book when I sell the car.

Why nobody with an ounce of sense really should pay any attention to Stamps in a Service book,

or really even to receipts anymore.

People are always at it...

Its good that Trading Standards & the courts take seriously Fraud & Deception now,

not just from Traders but Private sellers as well.

Public Confessions on Owners Forums the like of Piston in the head are the kind of thing that catches people out now, luckily.

Or as the case, unluckily.

Do you like your Pela?

Soz for the slightly OT, but thinking of getting one for my Fabia :)

Well yeah, I suppose I do, it does the job with a minimum of mess, and is safer and more comfortable than lying in the road underneath my car :) I'm sure there are benefits to getting it done the proper way every once in a while in case there's anything left in the sump, but tbh, even if you do it the traditional way there'll be remnants in the oil filter housing, so neither way is perfect anyway! As I said, I'm happy doing Pela changes myself (and checking everything else that I can while I'm there) and taking it to a good independent occasionally for a more thorough check and a "proper" oil change, it still saves me money in the long run and is more convenient. Booking it in at an independent usually means taking a day off work and leaving the car there for at least a morning/afternoon. Doing it myself I can have the oil changed well inside an hour on a Sunday morning.

^ Cheers :)

I've just ordered one. Dealer said they had changed before del, but 2K miles later I'm wanting to change. Problem is soon as diesel engine starts it blackens new oil so no way tellin'...

No fraud or deception involved, the stamp has my own details on it!

They were what TPS charged me at the time, yeah. I dunno how volatile their pricing is but it's probably only a month ago, so should be similar.
