change cigarette lighter to 12v socket cover

Featured Replies

Does the LED light go out? that will tell you if it powers down or not

I didn't want to sit in the car for 10 minutes to find out - or get the flat battery which is why I asked the question.  :notme:

Heres my one i did for the same reasons as you!! and its been brilliant.. the blue light stays on all the time but as its such a low voltage LED it makes no odds... just cover it with the dust cover and you dont see the glow..

An hour to do the work, £8 for the usb off ebay

As far as I am aware it is permanently live as I have left my phone charging for an hour plus before as well as a fridge in the boot after long journeys and not for hours on end. An led light I would guess wont use much power at all.

When I am not using my charger in it, I don't bother with the cigarette lighter, just leave it open. I do wish it glowed with the rest of the dash like it did in the old fords my Dad had

From other threads on here the general consensus is that the 12V socket (can we still call them cigarette light sockets?) stays permanently live.

It also seems from the threads (and my own experiences) that leaving one plugged in permanently has minimal effect as it draws so little current.

I'm no scientist or electrician, so I left mine plugged in for several days of normal driving; Some days not driven at all. And all was fine in an old Octavia with a slightly dying battery.

Go back outside an hour or so after you get home (in the dark) you will be able to see the LED if it is still powered (do not unlock the car as this will probably wake up the socket)

Thanks for the various replies. Looks like a test is in order.

Good work, very tidy. Where was the dust cover from cos they don't come with the double USB sockets?

Mine came with the dust cover, seems like most of the ones ive seen on ebay just now have them..

Works a treat, you do have to file a little off the original hole vacated by the lighter socket however its not an issue with a dremel and a nit of patience

possibly one of the best mods ive done, shuts my daughter up too when her ipad is about to die on long car trips!!!
