Anyone recognize this 'knocking' sound in the suspension?

Hi,

I have the following problem with my Felicia 1.9 diesel. When I take turns, and the road is bumpy, my syspension makes a knocking sound . Problem only comes up when I take a turn, never when I keep on going straight.

Made a little movie turning, anyone recognize the sound?

anti roll bar bushes or links imo

No idea....but if it was rollbar bushes it would be there all the time not just round corners.

sounds like lower ball joint to me, mines doing it again too emoticon-0120-doh.gif

I think it's hard to tell from that video (no offence!), but it could be any of the above - I've had ARB links make a noise only on corners - but I would also check the wishbone bushes/mountings as I've had some of those make some noise previously, particularly the rear ones. There are only 5 main things to check - top mounting, anti-roll bar, outer ball joint, front wishbone mounting, rear wishbone mounting. If it's the balljoint it'll be very obvious (and you want to fix it straight away!), whereas all the others can be a bit trickier to find if they're not visually obvious. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I will start with the balljoint, cause I don't want it to fail. So, I use a jack to lift the wheel and check te balljoint for open space?

Jack the car up so the wheel is off the ground, and preferably support the car on an axle stand (at a solid location such as the subframe - I usually put my axle stand under the U-shaped mounting of the rear wishbone bush as it gives such a positive location with the stands i have). Then give it a wiggle up and down. Any play should be apparent, although sometimes you will need to 'feel' it; I usually do this by placing my fingers so they are touching both the hub/upright and the wishbone, then when moving any relative movement between the two will be apparent. If you find it's a bit difficult to move the wheel vertically, you can make it easier by putting a pry bar between the ground and the bottom of the wheel and use mechanical advantage to do it.

Usually a worn balljoint will have done so because the boot covering it is broken - this is now part of the MOT in the UK (the annual vehicle test), regardless of whether there is play in the joint itself.

Update: I checked the ball joint on the left side. I jacked the car up and since I was not able to move the wheel vertically, I took a 'beam', placed it under the wheel and lifted. So, with the beam I could easily lift the wheel (even shock absorber moved inwards). I touched both the whisbone and ball joint but I could not feel any play, not even the tiniest bit. So, either I checked it the wrong way or there is no play?

Sounds like there is no play. So see if you can find some elsewhere - from the sound I heard, I would have said check the wishbone bushes, but all the options given above are worth a look.

Went to the garage earlier today. The 'garage keeper' took a little ride with my Felicia, and without any doubt the rear wishbone bushes. Should have listened to djaychela :). I would normally repair it myself, but since the garage checked the problem for free, I m letting them repair it. So problem solved.
