There is a due process required by UK legislation to make a job (person) redundant. It requires a formal announcement of a consultation period (which insurers will take as the start of any claim you might make, so if you are thinking of taking out cover, do it now, and hope it's 90 days or whatever the probationary period is before this announcement is made). The consultation period is then followed by notice of redundancy, which you can presumably challenge, bearing in mind that companies are obliged to try to redeploy you in an alternative suitable post. I'm not sure what the minimum consultation period is, most use a month, some longer depends on how many heads need to be cut and where they are / potential severence costs. Remember above all, it's the job not the person that is made redundant, unless you have transgressed company rules / breached terms of contract etc.

The consultation period can be as little as a couple if days if only 1 person is being made redundant, it has to be 90 days though if more than 20 are at risk of redundancy. Also once informed that you are being made redundant the notice period varies on your length of service From 1 week if you've been there more than a month and 12 weeks if you've been there more than 12 years. However they can pay you in lieu of notice so you finish immediately, if they offer this I would take it as the pay you would recieve will be tax free rather than being taxed if you actually worked your notice.

If you're not working your notice and taking payment in lieu then you won't or shouldn't pay tax on it.

Payment in leu is taxable unfortunately.

If you receive other benefits, car allowance, healthcare etc then these could be excluded from PILON but it has to state this in your contract of employment.

Well i havn't worked a day this year(tax year) just been getting standard SSP which is about £85 a week, so hoping that I either dont get taxed at all or just get a little bit of tax, i'm signing my VR papers tomorrow, just glad to get it over with now and start looking elsewhere!
