360 drive flashing question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Got a broken 360 console here off a friend which I'm looking to repair for them. Diagnosed it as a dead laser, but it also keeps failing to open so I figured a new drive was the best option.

Anyway, I've got a new one on order and would rather flash it than transfer the PCB, my soldering skills are a bit messy, plus the drive has a 2 year warranty I'd rather keep intact.

The thing I'm wondering about is powering the drive. Can I use the 360 to power it for the flashing (SATA cable going to the PC)? I ask as I remember reading somewhere that booting the 360 without the drive connected will get it blacklisted off XBL, which isn't an option.

If someone knows either way for certain I'd be grateful or can provide links to info! I have looked, but am finding conflicting info. (I'm really hoping it's a yes though!)

Cheers :)
