VW radio / MFD codes

Featured Replies

As some of you may know from my other thread about the mfd map cds, i've recently got my hands on the original sat nav for skoda fabias, only out of a mk4 golf.

starting to regret it already....

Anyway, i need the 4 digit radio code for it. The number is VWZ1Z7X4963602. If anyone knows an easy way to get the radio code... or can supply me with the correct code, i'd be willing to send a gift via paypal for your troubles :)

Thanks.

Check ebay, I think DnD services offer a service for almost anything, they are in Torquay if I remember. some units you have to send to them, others are postal. Have you tried the local VW dealer?

VW dealer won't help is its going into a Skoda.

I go past my local vw dealer pretty much everyday so popped in to have a quick word. They seemed happy to help to start with!

First up was to get the number off the radio, done!

Second up was a chassis number, hmm said it was going in my skoda so the number was no good. I got a chassis number off a friends golf which he said looked fine. Put the radio numbers in then the chassis number in and got the code for the radio. Yay! .... Tried it... Attempt 1 failed - safe. I double checked his number then tried again... Attempt 2 failed - locked!

So its now locked in safe mode and wont come out. VW claim i need the original chassis number from the vw car it came from to get the 4 digit radio code. Which is no good if you've bought the radio from a salvage car thats now coke cans and washing machines!

They didnt charge me and told me to go to a radio specialist who will decode it for me. Will pay them a visit on monday!

When I bought a second hand symphony to get my VRS back to standard the first guy I spoke to at my local dealer (Silbury Skoda, Cramlington,Northumberland)told me I needed to book an appointment, bring the car in with the V5 to get it plugged in to get the code. After trying for 5 days to book it in the guy asked why I was doing this. "Because your guy told me". He said that was *******s. I gave him the car reg, and radio serial number,£20 by debit card. Next day the code was emailed to me.

All they need is the serial number for the unit and car details so they can pair the two.

I think that you have discovered that that VW (or maybe even VAG) do tend to need the original "mother car" chassis details as well as the radio ID - obviously to help stamp out radio thefts etc. Which can be no good for anyone that has genuinely bought from a scrappy etc. I'd reckon that your radio will need to get handed in to some one that can open it up and extract the security coding from it - then run that data through a convertor to generate the user code. Its a pity VW (or VAG) are not like other radio "sellers" that just let you buy a CD of code generators that you pick the type and input the serial number - and out comes your user security code. For what its worth, over the years with VW cars, I've bought a newer/better radio with no code with the helpful comment "just phone this number and they will provide the correct code" - NO! And I've bought the CD that includes VW radios, well that only works for early, ie pre1997 radios - with no success. I did phone a specialist and he offered to help, first I tried the ID of a radio I had bought new from VW and the code he offered was wrong four times so he adviced me not to buy what he was offering for the other radio I needed a code for!.

And by doing that he is bypassed the whole security system that Skoda have in place. This is why the facility to obtain radio codes without plugging the car in is being removed from our system.

I know its possible to get the radio code for it, just need to find someone who can. Like i say, im going to a radio specialist on monday who usually deal with our radio codes at work.

Im just unsure if its worth doing as the price of fitting this correctly is going up and up! I might just look out for a genuine skoda one with the code and maps cd. I can only find vw ones on ebay at the minute though.... All for between £200 - £300. I only paid £30 for my mfd unit so might put it in ebay and use the money towards the costs of a skoda one plus extras.

Update: Been to two radio specialist around Newcastle this week and still no luck. They all seem to say you need the original chassis number from the car it came from.

I have the reg but thats it, possibly go to the dvla with the reg and try and request the chassis number but who knows... Will probly just laugh!

The next, and last resort was eBay. While searching for the satnav i seen listings saying we can get your code etc etc. I emailed two different places and neither of them can proide the code with the serial number ending in 192.

So its all been a big waste of time and money really, shame to have to waste a pretty much new sat nav but noone anywhere can get these codes!

If you do a HPI check on the original reg it will give you the chassis number and engine number...

Got a link to any hpi check in particular?

I've done hpi checks in the past and none of them have provided details such as the chassis number etc...

Thanks for the tip though, if i can get the chassis number from this it might be my only chance of getting the radio code as nothing els has worked.

I can get you a chassis number off a reg no probs.

I can get you a chassis number off a reg no probs.

Your a bloody star you know that! :sun:

Do you want to pm me the reg and original radio code you were given that wasn't right.. And I'll have a look what code I get at work..?

Remember if you get no further forward once the chassis number and reg is known, you should still be able to find a proper car radio place that can offer the sort of service I outlined above. In my case, I had only paid about £15 for a Gamma so was only really trying to turn it into a good spare/upgrade - so getting the code turned out to be not worth the trouble - in your case I'd reckon it is worth it!

Got are the "old days" were it was just a case of putting the radio into a poly bag or two and put it in the freezer overnight - no security code needed! (well it was said to work for Philips radios anyway)

I should also explain....

I had a 4 digit code on the side on the radio, i tried that and attempt 1 failed. VW then gave me a "possible code" which then came up with attempt 2 failed. The unit then went "safe" and had "unit locked" at the bottom. I've had to take it out of safe mode by leaving the radio and engine switched on for an hour (was actually around 57 minutes) then the radio came up with the 4 digit entry screen again.

I think if i put in one more code and it fails, this will be 3 failed attempts and will permanently lock the radio... :(
