Self sealing tyres

I've searched the forums but can find no reference to these. If there are, my apologies in advance.

My motoring is mainly on Continental and UK motorways, usually at a highish speed in my Tdi VRS. I don't believe I put much stress on the sidewalls, as I don't scream round tight bends. However, my only concern is if I experience a high speed blowout and as these self-sealers have been recently fitted as a standard on certain VAG cars, I wondered if any members had any experience of them.

I should appreciate anyone with knowledge of them giving their opinion on whether they would suit my purposes.

I have self sealing tyres, but cant say how good they are since the only way to test is to run over a nail or somthing!

They feel the same on the road as well.

The guy that fitted them said he mostly does high end cars like bmw's since run flat tyres give poor ride comfort.

They had a test tyre with all sorts sticking out of it, nails, screws, screw drivers... Etc etc! And it always holds its preasure. Cost about £10 a wheel iirc. Oh and both of the work vans are done as well. Never had any problems.

Self sealing tyres (ie conti-seals or pirelli-seals) + runflats are 2 different things m8..

Runflats have the thick sidewalls so if u have a puncture and the tyre goes flat then its still driveable.. so less dangerous.. but iv never seen them in smaller than 17's.. they wer designed for big cars like bmw etc.. which dont run small wheels.

Whereas the idea behind self sealing tyres are u get a nail in the tyre.. u pull it out + the sticky sealing stuff on the inside of the tyre seals the hole temporarily while u drive to tyre place to replace the tyre.. self sealing tyres like conti-seals are a massive scam imo.. u cant repair the punctures because of the sticky stuff.. so u get a puncture n its a new tyre every time. They are also nearly double the price of a normal tyre.. + all they do is save the "hastle" of putting your spare wheel on :-\

I somehow got the impression that the tyres weren't a throwaway after a puncture, unlike the foam repair kits, and that they weren't a run flat although the article itself wasn't that clear.

I would always carry a spare, but I was only interested in the safety aspect, i.e. deflation at fast speed, which has only ever happened once to me, but was a fairly worrying experience.

Which type are they please?

I currently have Goodyear eagle f1's but the tyre is inflated with the sealing stuff. It's not like tyre weld etc for temp fixes its permanint and basicaly offers a life time warranty on every tyre.

like i said in an earlier post, they had an example tyre and done similar things to this to the tyre.
