Last of the new Octavia 1.8 tsi models - experiences of dsg

Featured Replies

I've had my new 2012 Octavia 1.8 tsi for over 1100 miles now and am pleasantly surprised that I've had not much of the hesitations or jerkiness I had read about from other members. I had worried abour this pre-delivery.

My impresssion is of a very smooth, quiet engine with a seamless gear change but two caveats

1. If you "bully" the dsg box at takeoff it reacts as if it would like a measured acceleration at all times i.e. it does not "like" to be surprised by heavy footedness when it is used to a quiet approach.

2. It is difficult to control in reverse if you cannot rely on the engine torque alone to slowly position you- in my case when I have to accelerate over the slight lip of my drive/garage crossing it takes off a bit and has to beharshly controlled on the brake.

Anyone else out there with the engine and/or gearbox with experiences?

Could it be that software updates have ironed out the blips that earlier buyers saw?

Mine is coming up to 21000 miles and 2yrs old. Mine was never jerky but I had the hesitancy problem when it was new but it has either gone away or I just don't notice any more.

Reversing out of my drive is still an issue. Engine tickover not quite enough to start it up the hill and if it doesn't get quite enough throttle it just opens the clutch and I start to roll back down the drive. I'm ready for it now so it doesn't bother me but it would be a real problem trying to reverse park uphill.

BUT I love it to bits! Best engine/gearbox combination I have ever driven. The seamless almost silent surge of acceleration for overtaking still has me grinning ear to ear. Put it in S mode and take to the B roads and have some fun...
