Running in Period and Big Brother

Featured Replies

Hi

Saw an intersting case last week at the dealer where I bought the vRS. The chap is an independent who'll source you any new or used car.

Well as I was picking up the Fabia a customer came in with a new Seat Leon that was showing a warning light.

When the garage connected up their computer a fault code came up that had everyone scratching their heads. When they tracked the "fault code" it was "maximum speed exceeded". I assumed this related to engine revs and the running in period.

Came as a bit of a shock though and I suspect that if that chap was to make a warranty claim, and Seat could read that code, he might have a hard time after caning the motor.

I wonder if it's the same for all VAG cars.

Most likely, but if you dont run it in and thrash it, then SORRY, you don't deserve 1) a good car & 2) deserve to get refused warrany work

:)

VAGCOM jobber - just reset it ;)

To be honest, I've never owned a new Skoda, (will do when the new furby vRS arrives on tuesday!) but new fords, new vauxhalls, and three new Cirtoens in a row, and I never took care to 'run them in' and one of those citroens ran to 150,000 miles with no faults! none of them ever gave any real probs..... how important is running in in a new car? modern cars seen to be built better.... if it breaks, it SHOULD be fixed on warranty , as should any new and garunteed thing you buy.....

I believe Jon hit this error which is something like "Maximum engine revs exceeded, warranty void!" It's caused by holding the car at the limiter for 5 seconds (in top gear?) and I don't think is specific to the running in period.....

Can be reset with VAG-COM though ;)

As far as running in goes - get Auto Express with the strip down booklet on the cover - improper running in seems to damage cylinder linings.

When they tracked the "fault code" it was "maximum speed exceeded". I assumed this related to engine revs and the running in period.

It's to do with revs, but not with the running in period (this is only advisory after all).

Rob.
