170, any problems

Featured Replies

Evening, folks, just testing the water here. Have had my ex-demo 140 Elegance for nearly two years now, no problems at all. However, time to change methinks, either upgrade to 170 Elegance or get the 140 chipped to, say 160 or so, much cheaper option, that's for sure!

I'v heard of a few issues with the 170 luboil pump, does anyone have any experience of this?

Alternatively, any issues with chipping the existing 140 and hanging onto it for a few more years? What can it be safely chipped to?

Mileage currently at 21k, had first oil change, used 1 litre up to that time, so hardly excessive. Tyres have 3mm life left, again, not bad for a bus weighing ton & a half.

Any info gratefully received,

Cheers from the sunny (today at any rate) Scottish Borders.

My 170 has done 50,000 in 12 months and no problems at all.

I think the 170 has bigger brakes discs than other Yetis so chipping your 140 to 160 might not stop as well, I might be wrong though.

25,000 kms in a year.... so far so good.

I'd go for the re-map.... if you don't like it or it doesnt suit, you can always revert back.

50,000 miles in three years. Three minor problems, not specifically related to the 170 engine, and all fixed quickly under warranty:

Loose clamp on turbo; Xenon controllers replaced and a faulty pressure sensor for the DPF regeneration.

Plenty of power, Very harmoneous handlling (can you say 16" wheels?) superb braking.

No, you are right.

The 170 has bigger brakes. Handy as it's got more power and having a 170 and a 1.2 petrol I do notice the difference.

There have been issues with spline drive oil pumps but the Yeti does not use this design. Early 140's to WK45/09 and 170's to WK22/10 I believe have a chain driven pump and after that toothed belt.

As others have said brakes are bigger on the 170, plus a different turbo is used to that on the 110 and 140 (both these engines are physically identical).

Only one problem with the 170 Elegance, I can't drive it enough due to this thing called work :giggle:

OK so I've only had it a couple of weeks and put a whisker under 800 miles on it but for me after testing a 140 DSG that I was considering I took the chance on the pre registered showroom 170 with only 41 miles on the clock, given the price delta and the waiting list I guess I was quite lucky. I'd probably have been just as happy with the 140 or a 110 but the 170 certainly does go when you want to overtake and I'm holding the revs and throttle back due to running in. Roll on those miles, 20-30K it should be about run in.

Such a hoot to drive.

The CR 140 can be easily remapped to 175/180 and the 312mm brake upgrade is simple. Cost for both in the region of £700 +

No warranty problems for a car over 3 years old.

If you do the DPF delete you can get another 10+ bhp. But may come across problems come MOT time, but not sure in that.

It will cost more to buy a CR170......

Check out my car in the project section, link in my signature.

I'm on my thirs 170 CR, the first two in Octavia vRS models, the current one in the Yentle.

So in over 70000 miles, probably 20000 of which towing 1300/1400Kg of caravan none of them have missed a beat.

Is there as much difference once you factor in the increased insurance costs though?

True, but aside from the old DSG argument if you are the type of person to tweak a car why not get a 170 and make it into a 200. :D

A Yeti with 200bhp, plenty of torque and 4x4 is jolly good fun. And that's still with the DPF giving legal emmissions and no smoke puffs.

I would have done this (and did in my Octavia vRS TDI) aside that fact that I need a DSG .....

......... BUT now that I have a DSG I wouldn't be without it.

So Pleeeeeease Mr Skoda may we have a CR170 with DSG?

Insurance on my 'mapped' CR140 was + 10% with Skoda Insurance; but then a CR170 will be in a higher group and therefore will cost more, won't it?

Difficult to say, the insurance on our 1.2 DSG petrol and 170CR 4x4 diesel are within £10 of each other. :wonder:

I agree, but I need an automatic like Bahnstomer, so have to 'make do' with a remapped CR140.

So the DSG argument raises its head again

On the performance subject, I read or heard somewhere a new twin turbo diesel is on the agenda (if not already released) so maybe this will find its way into the Yeti?

From a personal point of view 170 is quite ample when you look back to the 80's we were driving Cavalier SRi's and this came out as a hot 130bhp edition just as an example, so I think things have moved on a lot. Did anybody get the chance to ever drive a Sierra 2.3D? "D" was for dreadful! All that aside I would probably be tempted by a 200bhp Yeti though

At the risk of putting my captain sensibe hat on (I forgot it when I bought my Yeti) I guess it's down to what you need.

For regular drives any engine will do, the trim level may be more important.

For longer drives I find bigger diesels more relaxing to drive

For safe overtaking more power = a quicker pass

Economy with the diesels, the odd thing is that the 170 is the most economical in 4x4 cars (according to the paperwork on the Yeti range from the dealer) and is cleaner too. Depending on the trim and 4wd v 2wd don't rule out the 1.6 oil burner, a cracking engine (I had one in my last car but quite a difference in punch compared to the 140)

Do you want the DSG? nuff said, that rules out the 170 but the 6 speed manual is a peach.

Remember the 170 can get you into trouble as well as accelerating away from danger.

Oh dear, I've just read my post and it tells me my head bought the wrong car.... but my heart bought the right car.

I've just read your post and had come to the same conclusion too (about my 170, rather than yours, that is)
