Head gasket going on my vRS

Featured Replies

Id suspected it was on its way when I bought the car from a mate, and the price reflected it.

I have had confirmed today that it is going and my question is, whilst its all off is there anything I should do that is beneficial?

I'm not after anymore power or anything like that but if there's anything worth doing whilst it's off then news a good time to get it done.

The car is a 55 plate on 88k, with a shark remap.

Cheers

Steve

Check to see if theirs any cam lobe wear, and check the followers. They might be perfectly fine.

Anything else?

88k ?

That must of had a hard life.

Mine is an 05 on 91k and rising and seems ok.

Hows it going on that milage?

Clean the intake manifold and EGR I would suggest. The either get it mapped out or turn it down through VCDS.

Apparently it's common on these engines, it's not using a lot of water but it's using a little bit, not necessarily had a hard life just cos the hg is goin, it's got full skoda history and 3 previous owners one of which was my mate who had it or 2 years, just one of those things.

How do I get the vcds checked?

138.5k here on original head gasket, suppose the failure will vary from car to car.

Myn is a 55 in 118k and it had the headgasket done by skoda a short wile befor i bought the car... The tech said its common and driving style wouldnt affect it.... Agreed clean clean clean everything u can get to :) cleanlyness is next to godlyness... Maybe buy an allard egr delete also will be easyer with the head of to remove all items...

Never heard of hgf on these until now! Got loads of mates with PD 130's non have had it, far from common I'd say. Mines on 164,000 with no issues.

Not common at all, in fact It's more the opposite. Quite a few have travelled well in excess of 100k miles on original HG and still going strong. Highest mileage PD 130 I know of was my mates dad and his 04 Passat which he sold with 200k on a few months ago with no problems.

Kind of going if topic really, anything else I should look to do?

I always believed the pd115 where the ones with head gasket problems, 1st Iv heard them being a common problem on the pd130 engine.

Maybe im wrong?

Really not bothered whether it's common or not, I've been told by my mechanic who is fixing it for me that he has done loads in passats and golfs etc, however as i said not bothered about that, the point of the thread is that whilst it's all off is there anything worth looking at.

If I did the allard egr delete then I'd need a remap again, how much would this be, I have a shark remap and the sts kit.

I`d suggest asking shark? I dont know how the sts works but could they not send the new map without the egr to you? Failing that cant you get the garage to map it out while they are doing the head gasket?!

The mechanic I use has nt the software to map it out.

I'll ask shark, cheers.

if the heads coming off you might aswell get the timing belt and waterpump done at the same time.

Oh, I've heard stories of skimmed heads losing power when rebuilt. I have two good PD130 heads here if you want, with matching cam clamps.
