Photo card driving licence expiry !

Featured Replies

Please beware that the photocard portion of your driving licence has a ten year life. The expiry date is shown on the front in section 4b. Failure to renew carries a £1000 fine and also invalidates any insurance ! Please check and renew if this applies to you.

Did mine last year, you do get a reminder though which helps

Just got my reminder through.

Me too

First rule of motoring, 2012, NEVER EVER depend on DVLA sending out a reminder.

Took me very nearly 2 years to renew my... Oops!

Only changed mine because of HGV entitlement, the other half still has the green paper and has no intention to opt for the plastic card. Its only another scam to make money

It isnt a scam.. :giggle:

Its called a better system than the old one

+1 Something that has a cost attached will always seem like a 'scam' to some.

How is it better than the old one?

From the DVLA Website:

"When applying to change your name or address on your driving licence, if you have lost your paper licence or any or both parts of your photocard licence, and or wish to renew your photo, the fee is £20."

I'm sorry? £20 to update my address or reprint a licence? Really? Costs involved are less than £2.

I wonder how many people haven't paid the £20 and are still registered at their old address.

Progress? Are you sure?

I know folks that still have their paper ones and don't have the plastic nonsense.

It doesn't cost you anything to just change the address

Mine has lapsed too by a couple of months through my own fault. Can the application be actioned on line (as you can for a lost license)? I'm assuming not because a new photograph will be required, hence a paper form will need filling in. Btw, apologies, I appreciate this will be available from the DVLA website, but as I stumbled across this thread, thought I would ask the question.thanks

I seem to remember reading somewhere that they can use your passport photo. Now, thinking out loud, if my passport was eight years old, then my photo would be likewise ,and they would accept that one, which will be over ten year old in a couple of years time. IF IT WADDLES LIKE A DUCK,AND GOES QUACK, CHANCES ARE THAT IT IS A SCAM( SORRY DONALD). :wonder:

Just found answers to my question. Looks like I need to apply via post office as luck would have it my passport is due to expire

They only accept online and passport photo if passport was issued within last 5 years. Mine was a 10 year passport, how I feel old now looking at my passport photo

It's such a half hearted effort. You have a Photocard but you still have to carry the bit of paper as well. I

I did mine at the post office today, took less than five minutes.

They took the photo so that saves worrying if it's the right size etc. £24.50 (ouch), should be with me in the next 10-14 days

In Northern Ireland we have had 10 year photo card licences since before I started driving 27 years ago. They are a really useful form of ID in this country that does not issue an national ID card. You get a paper part but you do not need to carry it.

My licence is paper and pink. It was last updated in 1989 and is valid for another 20 years.

I've been in NZ for 8 years so I guess mine has expired.
