Starter Motor - Check List

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I think my starter motor has gone on my 02 vRS but can I just check that I have everything covered before buying a new one...

Turn the ignition and nothing happens, no solonoid clicking, but all lights etc work fine.

Bump started the car and its fine

Battery has 12.1v (guides advise 12.5v plus, would .4 down be ok to start it?)

Using jump leads from a good battery also refuse to start it

Tapped the motor with a mallet to check incase anything is 'stuck' inside

Starter has 12.1v to it.

Checked the other cable and its connected ok and seems secure, cleaned it anyway

Anything else to check?

Also to replace I believe its just remove battery and battery holder, move some cables out the way and disconnect starter motor then just undo the 2 or 3 bolts and pull out, then reverse that to install.

Anything to be worried about disconnecting the battery, will it mess up the alarm or anything?

Cheers

Gav

The engage part of the start motor might be stuck.... might be worth popping off the starter motor and cleaning that up first - they are known to become sticky over time.

Might be worth checking all the contacts are nice and clean - just because you have 12.1v with no load doesn't mean you can supply the necessary cramping ampage. +12v cables and earthing straps....

Today I cleaned and lubed my starter ,and then I had an idea to prevent dirt getting inside. There is a big hole ,no wonder why it gets dirty and sounds odd over time.So I filled it with sealant.
