  • I'm in the same boat although my current turbo is on the way out rather than having actually gone pop so i have a "new" KKK ready to go on and am hoping it'll be an easy swap!

I`v never understood this sentiment. I got my fabia, within the first 2 years (ish) I had to do the turbo, clutch, all the bushes, and other bits. However, once they are done, you know they are good f

What sort of treatment is bad for turbo's?

I only know of cooling them down a bit after a journey (as well as regular oil changes)

Off the top of my head: revving when it's really cold (before the oil is circulating in the turbo housing), not allowing the vehicle to cool a bit (2 mins, I seem to remember) after a high-rev run (hot oil is left in the turbo housing causing it to heat up and harden the seals, apparently), and not giving it an occasional "Italian tune-up" to clear the soot off the vanes.

All the ones I thought... except I would say 2 mins is too long. 30 seconds is OK with a 1/2 mile low rev pootle back to the door

What sort of treatment is bad for turbo's?

Thrashing from cold, take into account diesels taking longer to warm up too.

Dirty Oil

Not giving them a second or two to settle after a hard run

Substandard mapping

The main ones I can think of. Warm it up properly before smashing it, change the Oil regularly, let the oil cool for a few seconds before turning off (some say dont bother some do) & dont put a crap £50 map on it. Do these few simple things and your turbo should live a long and happy life, even a KKK lol.

Hmmm.. I'm with you on all those.

Only one I'm not clear on is the crappy map. I've read bad maps can leave the turbo spinning on idle which is bad - is this the crux of the bad map turbo grief?

I believe my turbo has just packed in also :( approaching a round about at speed, whilst slowing down I went to power down again and felt it go flat, I thought nothing of it, then when I went to pull off from the roundabout there was a hell of a noise coming from the car, so I stopped and the noise was coming directly from where the turbo is. Car home and safe now (towed home ): ) let's see what tomorrow has to bring for my poorly vrs ;(

Sorry to hear that

So, what is it with turbo's going? What makes them let go?

What can the bad mapping do to the turbo? I've heard the map can leave the turbo spinning at idle which is bad for them

  • 3 weeks later...

I've just bought a new one from Turbo Dynamics. A new standard Garrett PD130 for £627 inclusive of VAT and delivery. They advised my garage will need to loosen 6 bolts slightly on the compressor housing to get it on.

They also said it would cope easily with my current remap from Awesome GTI - don't know how true that is!! If it means removing it, then I will do. I need the Fabs to last at least another 3 years before I think about changing.

I know people will say I should've bought a hybrid turbo, but I don't want to remap it again and secondly, I'm not after any more power than I've already got.
