Driving home from work today, pulled out at a round about only upto approx 2.5 revs... then heard a big whoosh as if the turbo had overspun and the car had a total loss of power...drove home as its only 2 miles away but with no power at all. The car im guessing is in limp mode, occasionally when driving i could hear a horrible rattle (possibly turbo??) that would go away as soon as i took my foot off the gas. I didnt see any big cloud of black smoke.

So, im guessing its going to be costly..taking it to my mechanic to have a look at on Monday, for him to strip and assess the damage.

If it is kaput, how much is a new turbo?? and how much should i be looking at in labour please?

You wouldnt get black smoke on a turbo blow its white you want to look for. Its strange there was no smoke atall though. If it is the turbo driving it for 2 miles might not of been the best thing to do im affraid. Hope its not to bad for you mate and let us know what your mechanic says.

Sorry to hear that hope its just popped a pipe, check all the intercooler pipework to see if anythings loose. Is it remapped?.

Thanks pal. Yes only mods are shark remap and mufflerectomy. Didnt see any white smoke, my cousin that was behind me once id pulled up, turned it on n off said there was black smoke upon starting. But thats normal for a diesel.

Id like to think its just a pipe or even the turbo sticking (just a bit of mr muscle or something required, so ive read) but it was the rattling that was concerning :(

Cheers mate....Wowzaa... lets hope its not a new one that i need then. Is it worth getting another Garrett or go for the Hybrid PD 150 price and quality wise? im a novice when it comes to fixing cars. Washing and driving them is how far my skills stretch!

I brought my vrs with a stage 2 hybrid turbo on it already. The receipt i have for it said the turbo was roughly that price. About £1200 all in.

I have a turbo for sale mate all in good working order done 65k but no problems at all £150 posted and uts all yours labour shold only be 5 hours at most as ive just done one 2today took 4 hours

The Garrett units are much stronger than the KKK's. If I was you I'd be looking at used PD 130 Garrett's that have covered low mileage, which could be hard to verify.

Always get nervous reading threads about blown turbo chargers.... Wish I could find out if mine still has the original bolted on, sounds fine atm :think:

Is there any threads about turbo's and what to check for, like how it sounds etc?? Mine has a slight whine when setting off which then becomes a quieter whistle as the car warms up and engine speed increases....

The boost pipes are well weak on the fabs, especially if theyve been disconnected to carry out maintenance etc, check the ones on top of the engine, beneath the cover on the left hand side (when stood in front looking at it) I had mine burst a day after buying it and thought it was the turbo! i managed to reatach it using an elaborate matrix of jubilee clips i had in the gash box . having seen a blown turbo, you cant miss it, any car behind would have had to slow down the ammount of smoke it would produce.

Well I had to chuckle last night as my house mate's 320d M sport decided to go pop at 60k.... £2k just for the turbo, but these have a habit of taking the engine with them by all accounts so he is squeezing his bum tight waiting to find out.... I had the same problem youre talking about minus the rattle, turned out to be one end of a boost pipe popped off. If yours is a boost pipe im guessing the rattling could be the metal clips clanging together when revving the engine?

Sounds more like the boost pipe. My turbo went a month ago and the back if my car was covered in oil, still was a good excuses for a hybrid

My turbo has just gone mate but it went with a bang at 110 with a massive cloud of white smoke

I bought a brand new pd130 garret turbo for £700

You sure its the turbo thats gone tho?

If it is and youve driven it for a couple of miles you will probs need a new engine depending on the extent of the damage in the turbo

I'll find out this weekend when my mechanic gets chance to look at it. hopefully its not the turbo with there being no white smoke...i hope i am overreacting
