Octavia 1.6 petrol runs very rough and makes white smoke when cold started

Featured Replies

hey

I got an 2004 mod 1.6 petrol octavia this runs very rough an makes alot of white smoke ( when cold started )

If i just start and try to drive immediately it is powerless and smells of fuel and produces white smoke .

if i let it idle for 2-3 minutes the white smoke dissaperes and the car runs normaly .

Anyone have a clue what this is ?

She dosent use any oil ore coolant

parts i replaced the last 2 years

coil

engine temp sensor

I'd have said that white smoke on a petrol was either coolant or oil. But if it's not using either, and neither is showing signs of contamination with the other, it can't be.

A smell of petrol on a cold start suggests over-fuelling, but that doesn't usually cause smoke IME. I'm wondering about injector leaks, condensation in the cylinders, and timing issues.

My best suggestions are VCDS to check timing issues, and finding a garage with a "bore endoscope" (no idea what that translates to but it's the correct English name) to inspect the bores for corrosion to rule out the condensation thought.

Also, what sort of fuel consumption do you get?

What do the plugs look like when removed? Sounds like rich conditions or more likely, air getting in on the entire fuel system.

Check the condition of the fuel hoses and any sign of fuel leaks, or areas where air might leak in.

Also, are the injectors correct for that engine, any modifications carried out, has it been mapped etc...

In the context of the coolant sensor fit a genuine one and not a Fleabay special. If you don't like dealer prices, Euro Car Spares and GSF normally sell OEM parts in the actual maker's boxes rather than $marque ones.

Changed all the plugs today , skoda didn`t make that easy :-) in fear of breaking something i completly removed the air intake manifoild .

when i started to removed the plug nr 2 there was alot of soot around it and the plug was so loose that a could screew it out by hand

i also found out that the old oil breather hose was broken so i pulled out that and replaced with a new on .it was in such bad shape that some of the plastic had fallen into the hole at the oil filter is this dangerous?

drove the car for an hour after, and no warning lights and the temprature didnt went above normal.

Now I don't know the 1.6 engines at all, but lumps of rubber/plastic in the sump could break down even further and partially clog the oil pickup pipe.

Next time you change the oil you should consider removing the sump and checking or even replacing the oil pickup pipe, if you think it is possible that the plastic has made it that far down into the engine. If it has gone straight to the filter it shouldn't be too much to worry about, but if it could have bypassed the filter it is not ideal.

How did this work out? Did you solve the problem?
