VRs clutch slip on boost?

Featured Replies

Hi all, after drivin the car for 4 days now got used to the powe delivery & I've now noticed the revs rise aprox 500 rpm if you floor it when In 2nd & 3rd.

Now not having had many diesels I ain't sure of their clutch charicteristics but when you floor it in 5th or 6th off boost, no slip at all.

Now the fly wheel is sound & once it's over revved slightly it goes back to where it should be and Carries on pulling great, and it only seems to do it when warm.

I can certainly live with this as its not an issue

Just worried it will get worse. Can't afford to start throwing money at it already as I've just bought a house & got this car to save money :-(

Anyone with any simmlar experience ?

Regards

Jamie

Don't boot it below 2K revs you nugget, no wonder the clutch is slipping.... If you want to launch from lights etc go and spend £1k on a Sachs or Helix clutch.

Errr can you show where I said I want to launch from the lights?

Thanks for your 'help' but I was just illustrating the fact when you put your foot to the floor in 6th it doesn't slip - that was all.

I was using launching from lights as an example..... Clearly took the wrong way! As I said, don't put your toe down until after 2K revs and you ought to be fine. It won't slip in 5th/6th if the clutch is healthy, it's only slipping at 500rpm because there will be too much torque when boost is kicking in. The standard map doesn't start boosting until 1500rpm and there's a massive torque spike.

If your saving money, that would include fuel so 'booting it 'won't help your pocket anyway. However, I would say any amount of slip indicates a plate that's starting to reveal wear, how far up is the bite point?

I am establishing that there is something wrong with the car so I'm not booting around every where.

Kiddy thanks for the advice

Am I ok to drive like this for a while?

Sorry man didn't mean to pick, that was a bit pedantic. You should be fine to drive it, but if it slips too much it may glaze the surfaces, then it will be finished. Take it steady and it should last no bother

Ok no worries mate thanks for your help

I'll just take it as easy as possible

What will happen when the surfaces are glazed?

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to car mechanics

I'm not sure but they lose integrity and possible break up? You really do have to slip it like mad though to cause a glaze....... Proper burnt smelling slip.

Ah ok I think I'll be ok then :) thanks again bud

No Probs, where is your biting point near floor? Or at top of peddle travel? Just cost near top means worn usually.

It's right at the bottom which is the bit I don't understand as I agree usually when there at the top there ****** lol

Maybe just torque overload from your map.

As others have said don't boot it before the turbo boost arrives to avoid maximum torque blasting through the clutch. My pedal never goes more than halfway(ish) towards the floor below 2000rpm - Way to much stress on the clutch and dmf as the boost kicks in on full welly. I change down when I'm in gear if the engine speed drops much below 2000rpm.

If it's slipping in 2nd/3rd, it should be totally ****** in 5th/6th, your symptoms don't seem to add up with those of a worn clutch to me...

Yeah weird innit!

what is your current torque? I believe standard takes up to 290 or something?

Dunno it got an awesome gti map 180 bhp

Could be spiky, my Awesome map wasn't great and did my flywheel in. But even if it has torque spikes at low RPM, if it's standard clutch slip then the slip should get worse the higher up the gearbox you go, not better...

Mine slips but not all the time it's really confusing as sometimes it will slip and sometimes it wont :S

standard clutch is rated to 310nm of torque anything over 300 and it begins to slip. (from what I have found in my researching) if you want a cluth that is rated slightly higher and isnt much heavier than standard then try this one its roughly rated to 350-360nm. http://www.larkspeed...Road-Clutch-Kit

correction lb/ft not nm would be higher numbers in nm

Just a typical case of remap creating too much power for the standard clutch which is only rated too 280lbsft as per Sachs website.

Mine has started to slip in 5th and 6th

Power down at 2500rpm and the revs jump up about 500rpm really quick then settle

I take it these are the symptoms of the clutch on its way out??
