Painting my Zeniths, primer coat has bubbled

Featured Replies

800-1000 is fine, personally I use 1000 for everything. Anything over that and the paint wont stick aswell.

Update!

Got my paint, 2 tins of wheel silver and 2 tins of clear, direct from Wurth.

After nearly running out of silver i let the wheels dry for approx 1 hour in 15 degree weather.

Started spraying the clearcote and a few coats later i was through the 2 tins i has for the job, not realising i had missed the insides of the spokes i put them in my garage to dry, i used 2 camping stoves to heat the place up a little.

I decided at this point the best thing to do would be to make the 1 hour rouns trip to halfords for some more clear, got home sprayed first coat and got a little sag. Few more coats and im done with a few more sags in the clear.

Spot the sag

Cant wait till they're dry and back on the car.

Going to use a bit of 1500 wet and dry to flatten the sags and then some rubbing compound to smooth them over followed with AG SRP and EGP

1500 to flat is too coarse, it will remove too much material and take forever to bring back the shine. 2000 is fine as 1k is very soft.

Have you added up how much the cost of materials, blasting and fuel has cost you in the end?

Ok ill use 2000 wet and dry.

Sandpaper, prep materials about £10

Blasting and tyre removal £30

Etch primer £8

Primer £8

Wheel silver x2 £18

Clear x2 £18

Emergency Clear £8

Tyre fitting and balancing £25

Total cost £89

Plus £36 for the Wurth silver and clear which my dad got me through his company.

It did work out cheaper but not as cheap as i was hoping for, i still enjoyed painting them so i wouldnt hesitate to do it all again.

Fuel cost prob 40 miles of diesel, most of the time i was passing on the way to work in my works van

Adds up doesnt it! Still, at least you used the Wurth stuff, its the best you can get from an aerosol. Had you paid for it of course, you would be getting very close to the cost I would charge for refurbishing a set of wheels !
