G85 PAS problem?

Featured Replies

I have just read through a PDF and this is what it has said:

The steering angle sender G85

The steering angle sender is located on the

steering column between steering column switch

and steering wheel. This sensor is used on vehicle

models which are available only with the

electronic stability programme (ESP). In this case,

the power steering sensor G250 is not fitted.

Any ideas then why i am getting the 00778 – Steering Angle Sensor (G85) faults showing when this sensor is not even fitted. I have physically had my hands on the G250 sensor. Very, Very confused now??????? :wonder:

Something on the Drive CAN-bus is disrupting the communications leading to incorrect faults being logged. You can talk to the Engine ECU because K-line diagnostics are still working and so the one fault we can trust is :-

18056 - Powertrain Data Bus: Failure

P1648 - 35-10- -- Intermittent

You don't have ESP so the G250 is fitted

The

18056 - Powertrain Data Bus: Failure

P1648 - 35-10- -- Intermittent

only came up when the engine was not running. I started the car and cleared the faults and this fault did not return.

I take it that the small plug to the L/H side of the main feed into the power steering module (J500) is the line thats causing the problem as this is the line that activates the light on the dash? or am i way off here. I am also thinking that if there is no signal to the J500 from the J220 Motronic control unit, the light will illuminate aswell. Is there anyway i can confirm whats at the end of these plugs (the ones at the J500) is actually correct ie should i have voltage at pin X etc.....

This is on a basic spec 1.4MPI????

You won't have ABS let alone anything fancy like ESP!

You will have Power steering which relies on the sensor at the base of the steering column (visable from the drivers side wheel arch)....the original black plastic capped one is a known faulty item and has been superceeded by the metal capped version.

yep, defo seen the G250 sensor, still unsure why the faults are being logged with G85 sensor fault. I think i'll just bite the bullet and order a new Angle sensor. I'm thinking that if that doesn't fix it i'm going to take it down the tank park and run a 70 ton challenger tank over it  That should sort everything out!!!

Just a note. I've had a Fabia in with the same faults.

As I thought its a gateway coding issue. Gateway needs to be recoded with its original coding, probably 14 if it has ABS, Airbag and PAS.

Recode and faults will either vanish themselves or clear down.

ABS was an option.

In order to be able to recode, do i need the full version of the VCDS????

You can code a module with VCDS-Lite

Sweet, i'll give it a go. Are there any guides on this, or is it just a case of plug car to computer and hit the recode button?

I have wrote down the current values after i have hit the recode button and they are as follows:

Software coding 00012

Workshop code 13765

Importer No ---

Once i hit the "Do it!" button should the computer tell me that it has completed the check? How long does the recode take? The lights are still on (air bag and PAS however, every couple of seconds or so the PAS goes off but comes straight back on again.

What address are you in there?

Went through button 14

14? Can't say I'm familiar with that.

Gateway is address 19

Is 14 the button number on the VCDS? As far as i'm aware (only from other information that people have posted) i dont have ABS. is there a set proceedure and how long does it take for the recode to happen, as i tried to recode (using button 14) and didnt see anything happen. Does the computer tell you that the recode is complete? just dont want to be sat in the car for ages waiting for a signal from the computer which is never going to appear.

Just gone through the CAN gateway (and quite rightly, as you said, it was 19) It seems to have cleared the G85 fault but has now reverted back to the J500. The airbag light is still on. When the fault comes up it says the following:

1 Fault Found:

01309 - Power Steering Control Module (J500)

49-00 No Communications

Now the battery is on its last legs i think, but the car started without too much fuss today. I checked the voltage at the big plug going into the Power Steering Pump and i was getting 14.5 V. Is there any other way to confirm that this pump is faulty before i have to go and shell out for yet another one?

If you have a 12v or greater live and good earth at the big centre plug, and ignition live at the four pin plug and no communication then it's looking like a pump. Mine did exactly the same, got a brand new TRW pump for £250.

Have you tried clearing the airbag light?

i have tried clearing the airbag light a few times now and it says something like "VCDS has tried to clear the fault before without success. Switch ignition off now to prevent further damage to airbag. Click ok, then when prompted switch ignition back on (countdown starts for 30 seconds)" I do as the computer says, but the light stays on.

Where did you get a brand new pump for £250? Which pin should be/is the ignition live on the 4 pin plug? just so i can make sure there is no short in the cable/plug.

There are only three wires in the four pin plug. Two are orange these are can wires, the other is the ignition live.

The pump was from GSF

What is the airbag fault?

  • Author

The light is on, on the dash ref: the airbag. Like i said, i have tried to clear it but the light is staying on. not sure if it is related to the steering light being on, but a while ago all the lights went out but the steering was still heavy. The steering light came back on along with the airbag light.

Ref the ignition live on the 4 pin plug: 12v plus is what i should expect to see here?

Yes when the ignition is on.

And if the airbag light is on a fault code will be stored in 15-airbag

What you need to do is open Airbags[15] and scan for faults.

I'll give it a go and let you know how it goes, thanks for eveyone's input so far

An Mpi engine never had ESP (only fitted to VRS)............also Haldex is the central clutch for the 4wd system (again never fitted to Fabia)...........if your batttery is more than 6yrs old and having problems holding charge then replace it as this causes problems with the PAS system as it draws quite abit of power.........also you mention that you have the older style of PASsensor (black plastic cap).........fit the newer gold coloured metal capped one as this also solves known problems.......but it defo looks as if either your code reader is reading stuff wrong or the PAS unit is coded wrong or of the wrong car!

If MPI never fitted with ESP then why do I have an ESP light on the dashboard that lights when ignition is turned to one and goes out when vehicle is started?

You're getting ESP and EPC confused, one is Electronic Stability Program the other is Electronic Power Control. You have EPC not ESP.
