Hi guys,

Currently researching for a Octavia VRS. And undecided is a understatement. Petrol vs Diesel, and Hatch vs Estate.

Advice and guidance highly appreciated.

Needs:

Commute 200+ miles per week.

Outside of work I'd probably do another 50+ a fortnight (current car has done 12k average a year).

Quite keen on a Diesel estate VRS, seems cheaper (tax and fuel costs), though some threads here may seem to suggest otherwise.

Flipside, similar aged Petrol VRS are cheaper and with lower mileage.

Help!!

Hi and welcome aboard.

Hi John, thanks buddy.

Wonder if anyone saw the Autotrader add for a 2008 VRS black diesel estate, with 77k miles, listed for £3000?

Have been in touch with the seller, s/he emailed to say the car is with them in Spain and the price includes shipping to UK and insurance, does this sound too good to be true?

Anyone have experience with using Google Wallet for this type of international purchase? What securities do buyers have against potential fraudulent sellers?

If the price is too good to be true then it usually is a scam. The usual story is that the car is not in th UK and they are willing to take 20% plus shipping costs. The English grammar used in the e mails is usually very poor.

I feel for the poor buggers who have fallen for this scam.

Hope nobody falls for it.

Hello there mynameismud76 and welcome along

The hatch has a plenty large enough boot, the estate is just the same but without the incline, so unless you have a dog in the back no need. Then if you go for a hatch more to choose from, I have a petrol ( remapped) and dislike diesels , but with the mileage you are doing diesel does seem the better prospect, with any car the condition and spec matters, there are some cheap petrol's out there as well as some people are blinded by fuel costs and not the total outlay 2.5 to 3 grand more buys a lot of fuel . When you do find a car you like, post the link and we will give it a thumbs up or down, good luck and welcome to Briskoda :hi:

Don't buy anything you can't see, poke, shove, wiggle or crawl under/over/around/in Muddy!

Diesel all the way if you ask me.

Hi guys, thanks for warm welcome and advice.

Some ballpark calulations of annual running costs of diesel vs petrol VRS and the difference (based on communting miles only) would be about £450. And to recoup the £2000+ difference between the buying price of diesel and petrol VRS's, it would take around 4 years. Still can't decide between the two.

Between 18" and 17" rims, is there much difference in ride comfort?

Here are some petrols I've found:

And diesels:

Should I be put off by the high mileage diesels? Even the one with 145k miles?

I have just got a VRS TDi Estate and am very pleased with it, I went for the diesel for the economy over the petrol and have the estate as I have two dogs, it looks and performs well and has oodles of space.

Don't forget you'll get more when you come to sell the diesel so that narrows the difference. You have to test drive them for yourself to truly decide, me, I just love the way the diesel drives and preferred it to the petrol, horses for courses, each to their own, you pays your money you takes your choice blah blah :D

Ride difference: yes the 17s are more comfortable but the 18s aren't uncomfortable.

Only this one seems ok, http://www.autotrade.../1500?logcode=p , it has not got the jumbo box, climate control or electric rears though, the diesels are far too high mileage for the price, it is ok saying they are motorway mileage, but the clutch , springs dampers , and brakes have not been replaced

£4900 that is what I would offer

At 200 miles pw (which I used to do) and the fact you may keep it for a while (it's a reliable Skoda!), I'd plump for the diesel. Take one stab in the wallet now, rather than continual little stabs every time you fill up every time wondering why you didn't. Plus they'll be biting your arm off come resale.
