Greased Lightning - Review

Featured Replies

Product : Greased Lightning

Car : BMW Mini

Cost : £16.99

Raiting : 4 out of 5

Ages ago this product came into my eye sight thanks to briskoda. The miracle product that could clean any car no matter what was on it, including concrete dust with out damaging the car. So like most of us who are in to detailing I was sceptical of its claims and I didn't plan on spending any of my good money on it.

Weeks past and I took a trip to my local motor factors where they sell the PoorBoys range. Whilst perusing the isles I noticed Greased Lightning. Intrigued by what I remembered of it from Briskoda I had to take a look. The first thing that jumped out at me was the size of the bottle vs price. It came in a massive 1ltr bottle for just £16.99. Much cheaper than any PB product on the shelf. The second thing I noticed was the wax content. The bottle must have been 70% wax. With no real use for it I choose to leave it.

Last week I was asked to clean a Mini for a friends friend. It needed to be readied for sale and didn't require the “works”. Because it belonged to a young lady it didn't have the level of protection most cars have that I work on so QD wasn't going to quite do the job as regards to LSP and because it needed to be turned around quickly for little cost I didn't have the option of clay, polish, sealant and wax so I needed a product to give it a short term protection. Remembering the amount of wax that was in Greased Lightning I imagined that would do the job and for £16.99 it was worth a punt.

I started the wash as per normal.

Instead of using PB's QD+ I choose to use Greased Lightning. Its a strange product, it works like a QD but with waxy properties. Once you apply the product you need to let it haze (2seconds in the heat) then buff it off and it will leave a superior shine. The only downside to it is that if you live in a hard water environment it doesn't lift water marks quite as well as QD. Other than that it, it is great at cleaning and leaves a great surface afterwards with quite a nice bead and run away.

Summary: Great product for a daily driver and for an owner who doesn't have the time or kit. DON'T USE IT ON A DIRTY CAR! Even though it says its fine, if you look at all the reviews the only people who mark it down are the ones who use it on a dirty car. Defiantly one to have in the back of the detailing cupboard.

I've been using it for years. I get it from `Ideal World` called `Showroom Shine`. As you say, not for a really dirty car but one that just hasn't been washed for a while and isn't that dirty, I reckon would be okay. Having said that I always wash my car first. It is really quick and a good end result. I usually wait till its on offer on Ideal World (which it often is) and get two bottles (2x1Ltr) for £19.99. It lasts for ages too.

One question, DBP...what does 2MB mean?

2 Bucket Method probably.

But I can be corrected if I'm wrong.

2bm. Is two bucket method. It's using two bucket of water with one with shampoo in to wash your car. You rinse your wash mitt and squeeze out in the water only bucket then dip in shampoo water wash a panel or half panel then back in water only. It's the best way to wash to keep dirty water away from your shampoo water so that your not putting dirt back onto the car

Thank you.

Sounds a bit of a `faff` to me though.

I think I'll just continue to make sure there's no grit on the car after the snow foam and rinse.

Apart from a `faff`, where I live the water is so hard that it is imperative that I dry the car as quickly as possible to avoid water marks. This 2BM would just serve to delay that I'm afraid.

TBM is proven to cut down the possibility of inflicting tiny scratches or swirls to your paintwork

You cannot see ALL dirt/grit on your car mandp

Its really easy ....just dunk your wash pad or mitt in the other bucket before picking up the shampoo in the other

It's also a great product for uPVC window's, doors & glass. .

May seem like "faff" but the more you put in the better it looks....

I think I'm giving the wrong impression here...when I say `faff` what I'm really saying is `time`. As I've said above, my only concern is to get the car dried asap to avoid water marks which are severe in this area.

TBH, if the water is as hard as it is here in Dorset no matter how quickly you dry your car you wont be able to dry every panel fully before it streaks, Your best bet is to go to the local fish shop and pay them 10p a litre for some RO water and just run that over the car when you finish, or if you can afford it/justify it buy your own RO unit.

If you dry it properly after washing..There wont be any

A decent MF Towel like a Chemical Guys Wooly Mammoth takes a few minutes tops

Any spotting you might get is easily removed with a spray and wipe of QD

+

Dont wash the car in direct sunlight if you suffer from water spotting

Thank you for this, Chris. I know what you mean about the sunlight and I always avoid this. I know that `QD` is Quick Detailer, but what is `QD +`.

Regards.

Mike.

+ means....'As well as this' ....Dont wash the car in direct sunlight if you suffer from water spotting :giggle:

Some people suffer from Train spotting rather than water spotting

LOL
