Used Superb II, go or no go?

Featured Replies

So family got upgrades from version 2.0 to v2.5 this June (we got a little baby girl)

We bought our -05 KIA Sportage in Febr -08 and it now has ~130'000KM on the clock.

Thats 80'778 trouble free miles. It's been serviced according to the book (at least once a year)

No failed parts just normal wear and tear like brake pads and such.

Anyway.. Im not here to talk about KIA.. I'm here to ask about you guys think about buying a used Superb II.

Im looking at The 4x4 170TDI Elegance model with 10'000 - 45'000 KM on the clock.

I new one in Sweden comes in at £30'000 and a used with the above spec £21- 24'000

Is there anything in particular you would watch out for or look more closely at?

We went to the Skoda dealership and tried the Superb and I am sold on the model it self.. The only other competitor would be the KIA Sorento.

Im used to drive a SUV and love it.. but the space the Superb has is just amazing.. the only car that can compare is the Merc E class.. and a E 250 CDI 4matic is £50k here.

I have the 4x4 170 elegance and love it so far.

The space is the great thing - very easy to get child seats in and out. Our two children are in the Group 1 seats now (up to age 4) so we got BeSafe rear-facing ones. These were a bit tricky to get in and out of our old Audi A4 - not so with the Superb, plenty of space.

From what I can tell, the fuel consumption isn't as good as the 2 wheel drive cars, but I wanted the car to be a bit more stable since it's a long estate , and I need to be able to get to work through bad (English bad not Swedish bad!) winter weather so went for the 4x4 and got some winter wheels ready to go too.

I bought mine from Skoda's 'Approved Used' list and haven't had any problems at all so far. As for what to look out for, reading through these forums at the problems others have had will help - paint peeling seems to be somewhat common, for example.

Hi!

What ever you do, be in contact with the previous owner before exchanging any money for the car. He/she might have very interesting info that the dealer will not tell you. Mandatory: Absolutely no crash history. Minor repairs on doors etc. are OK, but a crash requiring towing from the scene is a no go. If no one else, insurance company will tell you.

Second: Check for any indication from water ingress (floors mainly, damp/smell?). Leakage point may be glued windows. Hard to determine.

Third: If DSG: It should be smooth and silent. If otherwise: next car.

Fourth: Checkout all the electric equipment. Flawless operation (check with previous owner...) or next car.

Fifth: Check the paint and point out every little scratch to bring the price down. Especially the sills under the doors are prone to scratches.

Besides that and a complete service history: Go a head, but remember: You are on the buyers market. Cool head will save you a lot of kroner. Good luck!

That's my two cents. And yes, I'm still enjoying my car!
