Accuracy of fuel usage indicator?

Featured Replies

Has anyone checked how accurate the fuel usage thing is compared to the real amount for milage driven and how much petrol put in?

Three days now and I've seen the following:

40 mile run after taking car with 11 miles on the clock: 62mpg.

Driving 100 miles with a third across central London: 56mpg.

Eco run this morning coming into town 40 miles: 72mpg.

I think I'm going have to fill it right up and see how this compares to real fuel usuage, because it does seem very good.

I think the secret of the car is it's kerbweight of around 850kg.

Compare that to the average Fabia petrol around 1,200kg and there is a big difference. :D

Having said that though, IF it's over estimating by 20% it's not so good... will be interesting to see how accurate it really is.

the other week i topped up (i thought i brimmed it but it would appear i only put 28 litres in) but that tank gave me 380 miles, and that wasnt the most economical of driving as my 4 miles comute to work is up a steep hill, and i often get caught behind the bus/early morning school traffic

From the calculations I've done I reckon the PiD figures are about 12% optimistic.

This may be slightly off as it was only done over 2 tankfuls though.

Got some actual figures now.

Car is saying 59.9mpg. (average fuel economy no.2 via the little button under the stalk, ie, from new or last reset)

Actual based on fuel used to distance traveled is 58.9.

Considering it's still within the running in period I'm more than happy with that!

That sounds very good. Typically I've found the trip computer to be between 10-15% optimistic, on the VAGs I've owned and subsequently adjusted with VCDS :)

Some however, are bang-on or within a few percent which you can live with. Even fewer are dead accurate, but it does happen.

Off my first full tank I got 375 miles from full to empty, that works out 52mpg I can't seem to get any more than that on the trip computer, and motorway driving seems less ecenomical than town driving :S :(
