gears

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Anyone else experienced crunchy gears, my second doesnt like going in as well as it should and also third hesitates, or is this part of the running in process and im just being uneducated?

I found rarely mine doesnt always like going into 1st, especially after the start stop has just been activated, this can be bit of a problem at the lights.

No problems here, other than it's a little stiff going into reverse.

Yea same, ive stopped using the stop start system unless i know its going to be long traffic, tend to get a little crunching noise / resistance after the stop/start (yes i am putting thr clutch dow properly haha)

We can compare at the Maidstone meet.

Difficulty in selecting gears when stopped from neutral can often be caused by a slow synchromesh this especially a problem with tight gearboxes.

If this is a problem try lifting the clutch about halfway, in neutral, then depress and re-select. Should go in no problem then.

Snatchy changes between gears can be caused by rushing the change from one gear to another, a very slight pause crossing the gate should help with that too.

In the bad old days when I learnt to drive heavy vehicles with crash boxes you got a nasty shock up your arm if you didn't get all the bits in the box spinning nicely!

Ours used to do it every now and then but that was when it was very new.

Now it has done a few thousand miles it seems to be OK

First day with mine (well driving back the 30 miles from the dealer) seems fine all gears smooth. One thing I have done is cancel the stop start purely until I get use to the car, at least I know it works well.

I've had it a couple of times. I find that if (before you start off) you got through the gears in sequence up and down it seems better.

must be because it's new and i'm not used to it, i'll try what you said with the neutral thing :)

As vegit8 said, pausing slightly in neutral as you change solves virtually all the problems. The Police drivers manual, Roadcraft used to suggest counting to 2 as you change. If you do this 1-2 you will get silky changes! Try it, it actually works!

The Citigo gears are quite wide ratio in the lower gears with approx 1000 rpm differential first to second and second to third, 600 rpm third to fourth and 400 fourth to fifth. (my observations) I think that part of the problem that can be encountered is because of the engine speed that has to be lost before the synchromesh can properly do its job and prevent the crunch! 1-2 solves the problem. :-)

Some road testers used to high performance vehicles would probably refer to the change from first to second as being somewhat ponderous!!

Had a bit of a crunch when I forgot it's only got 5 gears and tried to change up straight from 4th to 6th, but that's the only problem I've had !

Cars gone in for warranty work today and while I was at it im getting them to check gears out because the car has suddenly stopped wanting to go into reverse so i have to release clutch a few times before it goes in, also second is starting to be a PITA to get in! I will come back with any issues "if" found

I also found that if im coasting towards a roundabout where i know i will have to stop, if i cant put it into 1st above 10mph even with my foot firmly all the way down on the clutch.

Just for your information. I'm driving a loan Citigo for the past week, while waiting for ours to be delivered this week, and no problem doing what you describe. All forward gears are no problem at all. Reverse just needs not to be rushed.

im driving a loan citigo today and it's perfect compared to mine :)

Thats good news then

I've just been out in mine and apart from it being occasionally notchy when cold, doing the pause between gears shifts makes for smooth changes. I'm not at all worried about mine, it is new so should get better.

What it all means is that crunchy gears is not normal, nor should it be. I haven't driven a new Citigo yet so I don't know what is before me, but it is either something that resolves with use or is capable of being put right.

I have had our new Citigo Elegance since last Thursday and no problems at all with the gearbox.

I see a couple of Up! owners have had gearboxes replaced under warranty because of this issue.

Mine's perfect, as long as gear changed are not rushed.

I tried the whole 1,2,3 method and still issues, just generally think theres something wrong with mine

ta night i can also hear the syncro spool up if im skipping a gear downwards

Gearbox on mine is silky smooth ! The best gearchange i've ever used I reckon. Also one of the best clutches i've used.
