Avon ZV5 205/55/16W reviewed

Featured Replies

Edit: The tyres I have fitted are actually ZV5's, ZZ3's is what I had fitted to the wife's old SLK years back (and they were pretty good for the money too.)

So, I've done a few thousand on these now, and I promised somebody on here I'd update as to how they are going (sorry, can't recall who offhand)

The only thing I've got to compare them to are the Michelins (MXV??? Can't recall exactly) that were on the car when I bought it but here goes.

Well, so far, things have been an absolutely superb experience. They certainly appear to appreciate having slightly over the recommended 2.1 bar to keep the steering pleasant and stop the car from being too harsh (I'm using between 2.2 and 2.3 bar), and they respond well to letting a couple of Psi out when driving really hard, although the steering does get a little heavier, they certain grip well and don't go floppy in comparison to the old Michelins.

The grip is a VAST improvement over what I had before, especially when pulling away hard. Instead of the Michelins inability to grip and bounce rather than slip when pulling away really hard, I just get a slight squeal from the Avons and hardly any noticeable slip at all. Cornering is true and confident (as far as my knackered, wobbly old estate will allow) and they don't appear to have any noticeable wear in the 4 or 5K that I've put on them so far.

So far, so good, and although there are many softer, gripper, better handling tyres out there I am certain, I am VERY pleased for the money I've spent, and for what I can see to be the expected life of the tyre.

Well worth the coin IMO.

Let's see how I feel about them when they're near finished, eh!

Had these on my Fabia vRS, thought they were good, but didn't last long!

Darn. I was hoping to see a good 20,000 + out of them. But then I drive pretty tame (mostly), and I will be swapping back to front halfway through their life.

Edited top post and topic line. I originally typed in ZZ3 when mine are ZV5's. DOH!

Ahhar! That makes more sense, as the ZZ3's are a really old pattern.

I had ZZ3's on a Volvo 480 years ago and also on the front of the Octavia when I first got it. I found they wore out quickly and tramlined.

I've had ZV3's on the Octavia too, which were pretty standard.

I'm on my second set of ZV5's now though and I love them. I bought my first lot shortly after they were launched by Avon and instantly fell in love with them. They last well and wet/dry grip is superb. They're also great at resisting aquaplaning. I drive the car pretty hard at times and they give great confidence.

I'm running them in 205/50R17XL 93W spec.

Yes, I did notice this. Not just my imagination then. I thought the wet grip was pretty good too, but it's hard to tell when very locally to me the roads get ridiculously greasy with the slightest spot of rain. Fun in the wife's 335 when you switch the traction control off fully though!

Ah, that's ok then!

Strange, I've had ZZ5's on my Octaiva, and wasn't that impressed, especially in the wet.

As time goes on, and tyres wear, I'm now less impressed by these I must admit, with regards to grip anyway. Probably about half-way through my fronts now. Trouble is, can't remember how many miles I've put on them either. Have to dig out my paperwork.
