Cleaning windscreens

Featured Replies

My one month old Fabia seems to have rather flimsy wipers that don't seem to shift insects very easily. Also, the wiper arc is already clearly visible and seems unshiftable. What products do people recommend for cleaning and finishing windscreens? Many years ago, I used something called Rainkote (I think). It required a thorough clean before application. Once applied, rain just bounced off - so much so that I hardly needed wipers.

I just use normal car shampoo to clean it, but I have a sponge which is wrapped in a net (a bit like the nets you get oranges in). Excellent for shifting bugs from the windows and bumbers. Think it came from halfords.

I use just the same shampoo I use on the rest of the car but for stubborn stuff try Mr muscles window cleaner but make sure you clean it off any paintwork quickly.

Sounds like you need to chnge your wipers soon!

The problem with brand new cars' windscreen wipers is that the first person to drive it tries to remove the factory protective wax coating using the windscreen wipers and it ruins the sharp edge on the blade required for a clean sweep. :thumbdwn:

You can use a glass polish (or even T cut) and this will remove the wax residue, then use a glass cleaner and get some new blades. This should then give you back a pristine view.

Always works for me.

I used a clay bar on mine.

I gather the new Flash car wash stuff does a good job too ;)

Generally just a wipe with a soapy sponge but once every couple of months I use Autoglym glass cleaner, then a glass cutting polish (Halfords own) before re-applying Rain Wizard.

Also don't forget to clean the wiper blades when you wash the car so that they will make good contact with the screen.

[Edit] Just did a 'New Posts Search' and TaviaRS has his name as last poster on every one ! [/edit]

I clean my blades at every wash - nothing worse than a 3 week old dead fly which smears itself across the screen every time you activate the wipers :grumpy:

 - those flies don't half fly :D

After claening your windows use RainX.

It's the best stuff I have used.

After applying just watch the rain bead off the windscreen it is so good, you don't have to use your wipers.

As for the rear window forget the wipers completely,

And because the rain is beading off the windows so quickly, your visibility is so much greater and thus safer.

Would never be without it

This sounds just like the stuff I used on my old Golf GTI Mk1 many years ago. The only problem is that watching the water bouncing off the screen is more interesting than watching the road!

Time for a "what's the last thing to go through a fly's mind when it hits your screen?" joke?

"Its ar5e"

Oh, and for me, I use glass cutter or glass polish (or both ;)) on my screen, although I use a coat of ombrello for water shifting, and it works really well. Beads it up and at almost any speed over 30mph, droplets just head north on your screen and there's no need for wipers at all. But be careful with the cutter/polish after as it removes this film, which is expensive to replace. Same goes for the Flash car cleaning kit, eh Monsieur pdtdi. ;) :P

Autoglym class cleaner (not the quick glass cleaner, thats hopeless). It has enough abrasion to remove road film thats been there for months, but doesn't scratch the screen.

The windows come out like they've been in a dishwasher, all squeaky clean.

I'll add another vote for RainX. Fascinating to watch the rain running up the side windows, probably helps visibility too, but I don't look much further than the window!
