VRS turbo check

How do you check the turbo shaft for wear / play and can this be done with the turbo still fitted?

When a turbo fails does it destroy the engine too? Seems a long way for parts to make it through the intercooler and back up to the inlet manifold.

I'm going through hell with mine ATM mate, knackered 2 turbos and not a clue what's wrong, I had mine checked a few weeks ago and it was fine. Then last Monday it blew :/

You can remove the intake pipe and downpipe. Then see if you can feel play on the wheels.

How much play is acceptable?

Had a quick look today and the pipe coming from the air filter box that is rubber connects to a metal pipe that goes across the top behind the engine, then disappears way down behind the engine on the drivers side. Is there better access to view the shaft from under the car? I assume this is the down pipe?

I found it alot easier to see/feel from underneath, but I'm no mechanic lol. :p
