Help ! What do i need for a new key ?

Featured Replies

Evening everyone !!

Ive not had my octy long and it only had one key which isnt in the best condition  .

ive had a nosey at some of the topics on here for clues now just need them clarified please !

I can buy a key fob shell with a blank key and have this cut to match mine this will open lock the doors but wont start the car ?

I can buy a 2nd complete key fob (chip, transponder) change the key and reprogram it to my motor ?

Save up and givesome all my pennies for a new one and retrieve my code from the ecu !

If i'm best buying the first option what do i need to make it do the same as current key or if im best going for the second option what do i need to check to get the right one ?

Thanks in advance

Anyone ??

If I remember rightly these guys charge roughly 60 quid for a coded flip key. Was a couple of years ago that I had a look when our friends lived near by. You could phone the local dealer and see how much they charge. http://www.carkeysyork.co.uk/carkeycutting.html

You'd need a flip key with 1j in the code, a blank blade and a unused transponder. I can't remember if its possible to programme the transponder using a full version of vcds or if its something else. To check for the code of a key fob you need to pull it apart and its printed on the end with the buttons.

You can also buy a 3 button one aslong as it has the 1j code, the boot unlock button works with the Octy

hope that helps m8

Sent from my Galaxy S2 not a Crapple!

Just to add a used transponder won't work as they are single use only to one car

I think you can code keys using vagtacho, but not vagcom.... But that said I am not sure what the process involves, I guess knowing the SKC is important too....

VCDS can code a new unused transponder (done it myself), what it can't do is retrieve the SKC (Secret Key Code) for that you need Vag Tacho.

This thread has all you need to know (the MKI Octavia is basically a MK4 Golf)

You need to call an autolocksmith.

He will plug in and extract the security code, then programme the key to the car.

Dealer charges about £240.

We or other locksmiths can knock a big lump off of that.

You need to call an autolocksmith. That is one way, but you certainly do not NEED to.

He will plug in and extract the security code, then programme the key to the car.

Dealer charges about £240.Closer to £160 when I checked .... still too dear though

We or other locksmiths can knock a big lump off of that. Or do it the way I did for around £50 (MK5 Golf which uses a transponder that cost £10 more than one the MKI Octavia / MK4 Golf uses

Now depending on how much "We or other locksmiths" charge this may be a better (less hassle) way, certainly if you will do the lot (supply remote, transponder, new cut blade and coding) for £50 - £60 then that is the way I would of gone, how much do you charge for this service though?

BTW on a MKI Octavia you may already have the SKC (on a sticker beneath a scratch off panel, which is stuck on a plastic tag attached to your keys) - later cars did not have the SKC supplied though.

I had a Passat before the Octy. Locked my keys in it when it auto locked with only one key. From memory, an autolocksmith came out, got in the Passat and charged me £65. I then thought it best to get a spare. I had a non folding, non remote key programmed and he charged me about £50 for that, which I thought wasn't too bad considering the stealers wanted £130 plus. The key was the second stage i.e. Could manually open the doors and then start the car and drive it. Couldn't see the point in getting one that just opened the doors (unless you lock your keys in the car regularly), and why bother with a full flippy, plippy thing when it will just sit in a tin in the house? Decent auto locksmith is the way forward, less hassle and job's done.
