Oil breather fix

mine has used no oil in 28,000 miles.....

I can only hope mine won't now after the fix.

Update on mine, went in for oil investigation after I estimated at 1.2l/1000km. They fitted the oil breather pipe "fix" as it had already had the rings done a while back and it more than halved my estimate to "562ml/1000km" as worked out by the dealer. Fortunately this was still over their 500ml limit so have had a new engine fitted YAY!

Obviously it does help if you are using oil due to breather problem and being pushed past the rings, but mine was still a dud anyway.

That is why I was always thiniing that it the above described isuue had never anything to do with rings, breather pipes etc. It is bad cylinder liners geometry. Due to manufacturing or damage (ovetorquing head bolts during assembly taking up the "slack" and then causing failure under load) when bores are the shape of a rugby ball no amount crank case pressure reliefe systems or new miracle rings will help.

Please do post your experiences after you had a new engine installed!

Don't forget about runing in - high gears, high throttle, low revs from the moment you turn the ignition on and do not idle the engine.

lol,

its an automatic gearbox, and it is not a new car, just a replacement 'Short Engine' probably,

no other new components!

Just drive it like a car. IMO

Are they going to give a 'Warranty on the replacement engine' for any longer than the Warranty due to run on the car??

I would push for a new Cat when the engine is done, or at least a proper inspection not just an opinion..

Well car has been picked up today so getting back used to a decent car and not the old man passat I had as a courtesy car  I think its a whole range of issues with the engines that compound to make an awful oil usage problem, glazing of cylinders from bad bedding in, original ring design may have contributed in some cases, high crankcase pressure etc. Will see how the oil usage goes.

As regards warranty they wont give me any extension for the new engine work so my warranty runs out early next year  Better get some high miles on it quick hehe

VAG should give warranty, I had a Passat that had a new gear box at 2 and half years old, warranty was for a further three years.

It is not an extension of any sort, new works will be warrantied but the whole of the engine I suppose but may be wrong here. Any new parts have the usual warranty (3 or 1 year on parts?)
