Fabia vRS alarm

Featured Replies

Right, Sunday night 8.30pm ish my car alarm was going off, soon put a stop to it went outside nothing suspicious, last night 11.30pm car alarm going off again, this time ran outside again nothing suspicious, turned it off and left it...

Now I dont think it is someone trying to have a go, I live in a Calde-sac with 3 other houses a million miles away from any scummy area's/people, but it seems strange that it has only gone off randomly outside my house and at night, not when I am at work or anywhere else...

Is there a potential that a cat could set it off?

On that note what would set the alarm off? As there is no damage to the vehicle or any visable marks of someone trying to enter?

Your replies will determine whether I sit outside m house tonight with a baseball bat :D

Cheers :)

Buy a horribly viscious dog and give it enough leash to run around car. Problem sorted...

About 2 weeks ago mine went off in our work carpark, I can see my car from my desk and nothing was setting it off, happened about 5 times across 1 day, then just sorted itself out - never did get to the bottom of it

Mine went off a couple of times last week for no apparent reason. Someone did tell me that in hot weather if you leave drinks bottles in the car they get hot and the air in them expands. Then as the temperature drops in the evening/night, the containers then shrink and can change the volume of air in the car, triggering the car's volumetric sensor. May be a load of rubbish but a good thing to check.

The other alternative is the car's alarm is just not very good. Sensitivity can be adjusted by removing the panel with the interior lights on I believe....

Chris

Happened to me twice in one evening a couple of weeks back, about 40 mins apart. Seems to have sorted itself out though.

What sensors does the alarm have for the interior? Movement etc?

Never had a car alarm yet that isn't temperamental

Havn't got one on the octavia and it doesn't worry me. Quite happy with just the immobiliser and my flashing red light on the door knob :)

I am of the view ( I know people won't agree!) that car alarms are the background to everyday life....everyone totally ignores them! (confess I do)

Used to get quite stressed listening out for alarms on my previous cars.

Think the best deterrents are a big discloc thing.I know the alarm is standard on the furby though

AFAIK, it's just a volumetric sensor in the car (positioned behind the interior lights) and then standard sensors for bonnet, boot and doors. :D Also not Thatcham Cat 1 on pre-'05 cars

Have to agree, shopping markets etc there totally useless.

However I think outside your house there usefull, as if it was someone breaking into my car I would of had a good chance of hunting them down with a spear ;)

flies in the car in the summer used to set of a cat 1 alarm i had on an old escort, maybe its that?!

My Dad's Furby did the same thing for a while, it went to the dealers twice for them to look at it but they couldn't find anything... mine's never done it.

It's a volume thing.

You'll find it happens after hot days - it never happens in the winter.

Sounds like my old clio.

Thanks for your replies guys

I can live with a few 'false alarms' but I couldnt sleep at night thinking it could be some scum trying it on

Minds a rest now, cheers :)

"Honest John" reckons modern car alarms go off because of fluctuations in the air pressure inside the car. He suggests setting the ventilation system to recirculation before switching off. That couldn't be a full answer though because the rear air vents would still be active - they're not affected by the recirc switch

AFAIK, it's just a volumetric sensor in the car (positioned behind the interior lights) and then standard sensors for bonnet, boot and doors. Also not Thatcham Cat 1 on pre-'05 cars

Correction - Thatcham lists the "Fabia Elegance and VRS" from Sept 03 as Cat 1

My dad's old Rover alarm used to go off in the garage. We tracked it down to flies or some sort of insect in the cabin triggering a sensor.

Octys only get CAT 2 as std :(

Hmm, my Fabia Comfort isn't listed. Does this mean it's not Thatcham approved?

The Thatcham list is dated March 2005 so it could reasonably be applied to all cars manufactured up to about that time, but not since. The reference above "Also not Thatcham Cat 1 on pre-'05 cars" suggest latest cars might all have CAT1 alarms - but I don't have any evidence for that. The Skoda website and the Fabia brochure merely list "alarm" against the Elegance and vRS models suggesting the others don't have an alarm at all (presumably just an immobiliser). Have you confirmed by setting it off that your car does have an alarm? (I realise that might be a stupid question...)

Mine is a 51 Comfort. And I think it has no alarm, I'm thinking more in terms of the immob for insurance. If it's not approved, I can get another fitted easily and cheaply.

You normally specify "factory-fitted immobiliser" with your insurance co. They should know whether it is cat2 or not so I wouldn't worry :D I suspect it will be Thatcham cat 2 though.... :)

... as listed near the bottom of page 25 of the Thatcham Compliance document:

Fabia (all models) Mar 00 - on

Well found, it's cat 2 with transponder and software lock.

I may have to investigate a decent immob then.
