Intermittent ABS warning light.

Featured Replies

Hi,

When I first got my Fabia, about a week or so ago, the ABS warning light came on, it stayed on until I turned the ignition off. When I switched the ignition back on again it didn't come on, except for the few seconds as it usually does.

A few days later, on it came again. Same thing, went off when the ignition was switched off, etc etc etc.

It did it again today and will probably do it again tomorrow.. :p

I've noticed that it only seems to come on when I've been driving at higher speeds, 50 - 60 plus. The first time it came on my OH was driving and took it to about 70 or so.

I took it to where I bought it from and he said it didn't show any faults on the computer thingy-ma-jig, whatever it's called. Is that possible? That there'd be no fault code.

He put it through its MOT before I bought it. Would it have passed if the ABS light was showing, unless of course it wasn't then.

I've read somewhere that it could be wheel sensors (dirty or faulty) or even the life in the battery.

Anyone any idea what it could be please.

Any help would be much appreciated

Linda :)

I'd get the codes read from the ABS controller.

Dirty sensors are quite common.

Best idea is to locate them then take to an air line and blast them.

This MAY solve it.

It will not pass an MOT with the light on.

Ideally get a fault code reader from eBay at about £20 to £30.

This would be probably the best way.

I bought one that actually turns the fault lights on the dashboard off...

The guy I bought it from said there wasn't any fault codes showing, might just have been saying it though.. :wonder:

I might take it back and ask him again. It's still under warranty but not sure if that'll be covered.

Cheers Steve

Thanks Taff,

Might try that first, if that fails I'll take it back and ask if they can check for fault codes.

:)

I'd get the codes read by someone who is independant. There may be someone near you who has a code reader.

There is someone just along the road, might try him. Just begrudge paying money if the guy I bought it from will pay, lol. :p Guess it might be better to pay the money though, least that way I'll get the truth. Not that I'm saying for one minute he'd lie.. :o

There is a FREE way of finding out...

Do you have a branch of Wilco Motosave nearby?

If so, ask them to do a "safety check" on your car.

It's free and will highlight any probs.

Just don't fall for "this needs doing or that needs doing" just concentrate on the ABS fault.

By the way ABS sensor from them are £29.17 each so it's not a biggy to sort.

Use meths to clean the reluctor rings also..........could be that the reluctor ring has developed a "dead" spot on it which causes the ABS sensor to skip........when it starts triggering at stupid low speeds every time you hit the brakes you have this problem.......happened to me........and it didn't show up fault codes on three readers.......only showed up when the dealer looked at the signal outputs from the sensors.........so new wheel bearing/hub units...as the reluctor ring is built in!!!!!
