FL MFSW on Pre-FL: Yes or no?

Featured Replies

Can anyone give me a straight answer: is it possible to retro-fit a FL 3 spoke MFSW for radio & phone to a manual pre-FL (2007) Octavia Mk2?

I know about upgrading the steering controller. That's in hand.

I have a new CAN gateway fitted already and a 2010 Columbus & a 7P6...D BT module.

Is it possible will it all work?

I've read loads of threads, but nothing I've seen is conclusive.

I have now been told that it won't work fully - i.e. it won't control the Maxidot (which I don't have and is controllable from the wiper stalk anyway).

Also been told that I need a new CAN Gateway. Since I updated this when I fitted the Columbus to avoid battery drain, it should be fine. I can't remember which version I fitted, but it was a 2011 version with the installation list as opposed to long coding.

I also have a 'BP' steering controller waiting to be fitted with the MFSW which supports the MFSW, cruise and Maxidot.

Anyone have any experience of this fitting option?

Or should I just stick to a 4 spoke pre-FL MFSW with push buttons?

At least I won't need a new airbag...

Surprised no one can say yes or no as to whether it is do-able.

Somebody must have tried it.

Free bump

I had this response from CarsEquipment.com today:

Hi,

Yes will work only switching menu on maxidot display of instrument cluster will not work. Because SW inside dashboard can not communicate with this roling button on steering wheel. Sou instrument cluster (dashboard) you must still remote via stalk.

You need controler on link below:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1K0953549CH-1K0-953-549-CH-steering-unit-for-VW-Skoda-/330627885592?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_100&hash=item4cfaf52a18

I knew about probably needing the latest 'CH' controller and guessed that the MFSW would not communicate with the Maxidot (which I don't have) probably due to the BAP protocol being used on FL Octavias.

Will the phone buttons actually work to control the phone (i.e. when you press the 'phone' button on the steering wheel, will it mute the stereo and activate voice dialing or control the phonebook functions on the Columbus)?

This is what I have installed at the moment:

CAN gateway: 7N0 907 530 C

Bluetooth: 7P6 035 730 E

Columbus: 3T0 035 680 A (on firmware 4xxx)

Steering controller: 1K0 9593 549 BP (to be fitted along with the MFSW - current;y running a 'BP' module with CC)

Has anyone actually done this yet?

Can't see why it wouldn't work, from what you've listed there. Maxidot control won't work, but then you've checked that.

As for confirmation and avoidance of you being the guinea pig, give Shark Performance a shout - if anyone's done one, chances are they have.

I have the non-MFSW FL wheel in mine and it needed a s/wheel controller change, but apart from that it was fine.

I would say the other buttons on the s/wheel are the major unanswered question here - as it depends how these communicate. But I'd wager these use std CANBUS protocol through the s/wheel controller in the same way a pre-FL MFSW would.

Thanks Wardy.

I hadn't thought of asking Shark - I suppose I dismissed it as there was no money / business in it for him as I was doing it myself.

Think I might be a guinea pig on this one.

Squeek! Squeek!
