Rumbling and knocking noise from front :-(

Featured Replies

Hi all, i recently changed my anti roll bar bushes, as there was a knocking noise from the front of my Octy VRS, however I know hear a knocking noise from the front left, when I go over bumps. And I hear a rumbling noise from the front right at motorway speeds; above 50/60mph. I've gone to my local garages and have changed the track rod end on the front right side. There is now little to no play on any of the wheels, so im told it cannot be wheels bearings, but the rumbling noise still remains. No garages know what the issue is. Would anyone be able to help or point me in the direction of VW/SEAT/SKODA specialist garages within or near the west midlands ??

Any replies are greatly appreciated :-)

bearing noise will get noticable louder if you load up that side of the car by cornering hard at around 50mph

all I can say is I had the rumbling and new bearing sorted it, currently got a clunk on the NSF to investigate though

seems like the front of these cars as standard is not up to the job unfortunately

There doesn't have to be any end play in a bearing, for the bearing to be at fault. End play just shows you when a bearing is dangerous, not knackered.

Jack car up on said side and hold spring with one hand and spin wheel with other, if you can feel any sort of vibration bearing is knackered

Thanks for the replies, i'll be down the garage on Wednesday, to check if theres any vibration in the spring, so will let you know how it gets on :(

Find a local tire dealer who has the old "ride on" wheel balancing machine. It spins the wheels at speed and the bearing noise can easily be heard.

Get the front end up on axle stands and get someone you trust to drive it up in 3rd or 4th with traction control off and get down near each wheel in turn and have a listen. Noisy equals fubar.

Does it creek under breaking? I had a knocking noise on the o/s/f and it was caused by the big bush at the back of the lower arm was collapsing and letting my arm move also my top mount was knackered / on its way out
