Egr Leaking oil

Featured Replies

HI All

Wondered if anyone seen this before?

Had my car out to a skoda dealer near me last week getting cv joint done (under joint warranty)

While there i had them check for leaking turbo < as getting a throaty noise on rev up

They came back and said that egr was wrecked , and had oil in it so couldnt be cleaned

I have just had a look at pipes from airbox to intercooler, all have a coating of oil None in filter

But i noticed oil leak from egr ,so called garage , they said that oil in pipes was nothing to get worried too much about

But when i asked if they were sure egr couldnt be cleaned ? he said the prob was the seal from the mechanical side of egr

To the electrical side was the seal that was gone! and the oil was getting into electrical side, was where it was escaping from

This sound right to you guys

Any way looking at over £ 300 for new egr fitted from them

Car is 2007 elegance with 1.9 tdi and has over 113,000 miles on it but sadly still 6 months payments as well

My Fabia had oily gunk seeping from the EGR and from the surrounding intercooler pipework for years with no ill affects.

My tame VW master tech cousin said that it was to be expected.

However "just in case" I bought a second hand EGR for my Fabia's ASZ engine off eBay for £20, and had an independant garage fit it along with news seals and gaskets for about £30

I sure know i'd rather spend £50 than £300.....

The EGR valve design varies with the age of the engine. They all leak oil eventually, which doesn't affect the older type very much. I just wrap a small strip of old towel around the body covering the two vent holes and change the towel at each service. The later electrical EGR valves are a nightmare.

When did they change them, on the AWX engine? How obvious is it to tell which is which?
