what are my options in a 2008 superb II regarding BT & Nav?

Featured Replies

it seems my car has a Bolero unit in it

what are my options for Sat Nav & Bluetooth?

i will want to keep the reversing sensor display and aircon display that is already on my head unit

i could live without Sat Nav if i had to as i have a unit i can stick to the screen but full iphone 4s bluetooth funtionality is needed (phonebook etc)

i have been looking at the Columbus on ebay but there are a few different ones

some LED some LCD

some 40 gig some 30 gig

some are 2008 and some are 2012

and then there are the version letters b/c/d/e/f and so on

i have MFSW and would want to keep that

i have been offered a lcd RNS 510 Columbus with code for £370

i have also looked at a Kenwood DX520VBT which i can get new for £470 but i dont think it will show the reverse sensor and aircon controls

there is the Kenwood DNX521DAB but thats £900 but says it will do the MFSW/sensors/aircon etc

the more i look the more i get confused

cheers folks

is there no ice gurus out there at the moment?

There is no such thing as a 40GB columbus, they are all 30GB. The LED ones are newer than LCD, however apart from the screen they are functionally the same once loaded with the latest firmware and maps.

The columbus is a nice system, but it does not incorporate BT. to add BT you'll need to budget for the separate bluetooth module. Watch out as there are 2 versions of the module, one will work the iphone fine whilst the other will not work with it at all.

Since that unit has Video in motion, V8 maps with speed and red light cameras its far from standard since VIM, and speed and red light cameras are not part of the original spec.

best staying away from that then?

this is a real minefield with these lol

given that these units have had some reliability issues, if it was me in your situation, I'd probably go down the route of the Kenwood. At least you get a 2 year warranty. I'd go for DAB unit myself, just because id prefer having DAB option, but remember to factor in extra cost of aerial too if you want this. If not fussed about DAB go for other version.

As for air con display, personally I think this is a waste of time. I don't need instant reminders what button I pressed or temp I turned too. Same goes for reversing display, when reversing I tend to be looking backwards ;) and beeps are more than enough.

cheers

now that makes a lot of sence and would also be a cheaper option

seeing as the Kenwood also has Parrot Bluetooth i cant see having any issues with that either

as long as my steering wheel buttons still work i would be happy

it is also according to what i have been told plug & play so no wires to chop etc

  • 1 month later...

I have the Kenwood dab and have a problem with it keep connecting then disconnecting its doing my head in

If it helps I have a columbus and BT option fitted to my 2006 TFSI. I dont have the aircon/temp and reversing info on the display anymore but I dont miss it at all and I dont use it when reversing. I look out the back or use the mirrors and the beeps are all you really need. However if you have a later version of the conrol module it will still display on a newer unit.

The advantage of the columbus also means you get the nav and phone info displayed in your maxidot which I personally really like and find it useful.

I also have a bolero unit in my 2007 tdi (also have steering wheel controls) which I had with a parrott kit in and was having so many problems with it dissconnecting I removed it and fitted the OEM BT phone kit. Best decision I made. I now dont have any problems with phone connectivity.

I have a Galaxy S3 but I have also tried it with iphone4 (not tried the 5 yet) and both phones work without any problems. The only thing to note is sometimes it takes a while for all the contact info to load up.

I would always opt for OEM but the sound quality is usually better with the Kenwood option. Fitting a non OEM unit and the relevant adapters should still allow you to use the steering wheel controls but you wont get any info displayed in the maxidot.

Have you seen this: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/257057-pioneer-avic-f9310bt-skoda-vw-seat-specific-navigation-head-unit-great-columbus-alternative/

Just noticed you removed and sold the Kenwood. What were you unhappy with on the Kenwood set up?

i may in time move to a Columbus if i ever see one complete with BT inc for decent money

im like that lol

i get something into my head and thats it :wall:
