The plug light turns off straight away (Plumes of unburnt diesel)

Featured Replies

Hello all,

i have noticed that plug light has stayed on for max. time

after reading this great forum, i did the CTS replacement (green one)

after the replacement it goes off straight away.

i thought it was dodgy therefore i have bought another one and replace it...but the status is the same

now when it is cold ( 9c) i have a poor start .. .and i don't hear a relay turn on or off (before i did)

there is always Plumes of unburnt diesel ...smell present ..

i had service (belt replaced) recently (before the CTS changed) but i had this error (light has stayed on for max. time) before

Any idea what i need to do?

Glow plugs or relay or something else .. or how to check it?

Thanks a mill.

Tooth out when cam belt was changed? Was it ok before that?

i had service (belt replaced) recently (before the CTS changed) but i had this error (light has stayed on for max. time) before

- firstly i had - light has stayed on for max. time (bu i could hear reley) - except this all was fine

- than i got belt replaced

- everything was the same (although i can't really tell - i have change it within 2-3 days after the belt

then i have changed the CTS (twice) couse i thought that it is the CTS that is not working

hope that helps

Thanks

If you unplug the CTS, does it make a difference how long the glowplug light stays on?

At 9°C you won't get any preheat and the light should go off almost immediately.

If you see no difference, the chances are you have a bad connection.

hey, thanks for reply.

yes, i have unplug it and it stays on to max time. Does this mean that relay 109 should work properly.

I have gone through the forum before posting this topic and i could see many had similar issues but all topics are without final answer to this.

all i can think of (based to topics on this forum) is or:

- relay 109

- glow plugs - although i put this as last

- the cambelt was changed and after that i have noticed that fuel consumption increased for 1l / 100km ... and there is a smell of diesel (maybe something to do with timing - i don't know what does that mean)?

no other ideas...

anyone?

thx

Relay 109 is not related to the glowplugs and wouldn't cause black smoke.

The CTS seems to be OK. If it were to read too low, the ECU would inject more fuel.

Is the smoke sooty black or is it more grey?

Timing problems are usually more grey but it's often difficult to tell.

What engine/year is the car (the 3-character engine code can be found on the options label in the service log book or under the carpet in the boot).

thx for reply.

hmmm. i can tell really what kind of a smoke it is ...it is not that much of a smoke than just the smell of unburned or partially burned diesel

but now in the morning 7c-11c it depends on the day i have a wired start ...it starts on a second or third round (but with first turn of key) and it is a bit shaky for few seconds ... then everything is ok except of a higher consumption and smell.

the code is ASV (110 tdi) 2001 elegance

You asked about timing. When the timing belt is changed, the injection pump timing must be adjusted. I don't think the timing is the problem here.

Can I just confirm that the glowplug light goes out almost immediately?

It's unusual to smell diesel unless there is a leak or faulty injector. Is the smell coming from the exhaust? How many miles has it done?

yes it goes out immediately. stays maybe just for a second.

it has 200k driven highway everyday approx. 250km per day for last year

i would not state that from exhaust ...when i drive and stop when i open the door it is all over ... and on stop light .. i get it inside. through the vent i believe.

i am strongly convinced that the smell is something to do with the light, before the cambelt change and the CTS sensor everything was in perfect order ..

I changed the belt on my car a while ago, and noticed that if the pump timing was too far retarded it behaved like a glow plug or two had failed. Have set timing with vag-com and all is as it should be now. I would get it checked before it gets much colder

hey, thx for that.

I believe as well this might be the case.

have you had more fuel consumption as well? among other symptoms stated?

how much time do they need for this to set and how much this might cost?

thanks

Fuel consumption on mine has always been around 60 miles per gallon. The timing is really easy to set if you have vag com and half an hour is more than enough time to set it up. The only time my car goes to a garage is for its annual MOT test. Lol
