Problem with emissions light coming on which turned out to be egr playing up according to fault code- dealer quoted £250ish for new egr valve fitted

So, 2 tins of wynn's egr 3 squirted into the intake, a lot of wheezing, hicupping, clouds of smoke and so on....

And the car is now smoother, quieter, no more engine lights, and much more responsive......

i wouldnt have believed it, but I guess at 110k miles it was well coked up

Result- total cost- about £16

We carry this as standerd kit, had some good resalts but i would'nt say it was perminant repair, but intrested to see how it lasts .

I used this on one of my cars a Vectra 3.0 V6 CDTI that I had remapped to 225bhp, after a few problems I realised it was EGR. After using it I had the same results as you, smoke rough idling which to be fair it said on the tin would happen. It also put my EML out and the car ran well for another year after using it before I sold it.

If I'm honest I still miss that Vec, everything said about that car was BS, mine had every extra, full heated leather and Sri spec handled well. It was a right Q car, the torque was immense and the only give away was the twin exhausts which no-one ever seen when you were teasing them to move over ! After owning a 330D I wouldn't say the BMW was worth the extra cash after the Vectra !

<p>Interesting. If you remove the pipe before the EGR, does the car not suffer a boost leak? Mine ran like a pig when the O ring seal failed and the pipe popped off. Was under power though...

In addition, should one be worried about "hydrolock"?

Haven't tried that,but have used wynns dpf which has significantly reduced the number of regens the car now goes thru....it apparently allows the soot to burn off at lower temps after applying it.

To be honest I was considering using this, but there is only so much a chemical sprayed into the air intake can do.

Instead I took the EGR and anti-shudder flap motor off the car and gave it a very good clean out.

On the 2.0 TDI at least, it's very easy as it's only three bolts (one of which is very long) plus the two that hold the EGR feed pipe on.

Inside the valve it's not actually that dirty with an oily film and a small amount of soot all over. Bearing in mind that has done 110k miles, that's very impressive compared to the old 1.9 TDI EGR system.

The real problem and the reason I'm glad I had it all off, was a few hard deposits around the valve seat point and the flap motor.

I had to take a pick after a soak in solvent for 5 minutes, before this layer would come away and free up the valve to fully mate on close.

A bit more solvent carefully applied afterwards and then it's pretty shiny and clean inside.

I personally don't see how a spray in cleaner, that's passing for but a few seconds can do the same as a solvent soak, pick and solvent wash.

I'm sure it'd do a fair job of removing the film and some of the softer deposits, but I just don't see that it can take of the hard layers of carbon that have formed over time.
