Limp mode... but only in top two gears

Featured Replies

So a little odd, but on the same fairly flat autobahn, when pressing on I ended up in a limp mode.

I've yet to scan the car, however, it's odd that I managed to take the car up to near the redline in the first four gears but that the car dropped into limp mode at about 2.5 to 3k rpm in 5th gear.

I repeated this and sure enough, even up hills you can rev to close to the redline in the lower gears without a limp mode.

This seems a really odd case for a sticy VNT mechanism, since I'd have expected that to exhibit itself in the lower gears up a hill etc.

Any thoughts from anyone on this?

I'll be having a proper scan of this later.

No its normal for sticky vnt on your engine. Search for Mr muscle vnt turbo treatment and follow the guide. Details on your engine are further down the thread for those with egr cooler.

It'll work mate. My uncles had the high gear under pressure limp.

Since I've got an aluminium head on the engine and other aluminium parts, then I'd have thought I ought to be bleeding careful with oven cleaners.

I'll have a look at reading the codes, but was thinking more along the lines of could a blocked up EGR system be causing this.

Still, I'm not ruling out a sticky VNT and the fact that's it'd need cleaning properly.

I did get offered a revive cleaner treatment for not much, so it might be worth getting that done. The cost would be similar to the Mr Muscle once you'd paid somebody to take the turbo off.

Anyone tried this and was it any good?

EDIT:

Just looked at the thread and you suggest it can be done on car and as it's exhaust side only, then obviously it'll just be going out of the exhaust too.

Yup, it shouldnt hit the head. Like I say in my thread, take exhaust off turbo (3 bolts) and pull it away and apply Mr muscle direct with A wd40 nozzle and straw, you have to be a numpty to get that in the head.

Try some Forté Diesel Turbo Cleaner if you don't fancy dismantling the turbo

I had a look today, as I was going to check and clean out the EGR and flap etc.

Took all the ducting off and I think I can see it, but it's right back up against the bulkhead and not really something I can easily undo from the top.

You've got the long pipe from the front to the cooler and then a shorter pipe from the cooler downwards. I only saw that by putting a camera down there and taking a picture.

So how on earth do I get to this and undo it (I assume at both ends) so that I can inject the Mr Muscle and give it a go.

Oddly the EGR etc was all pretty clean considering the car has done 110k miles.

i just did it by feel, exactly same engine on a passat, exactly as described.

Can you get to exhaust pipe from turbo, you may find it easier undoing that and pushing pipe in there directly. Only you have to keep adding some and at differeny angles one at 12 oclock 3 and 6 and 9 through the turbo fins and pump the actuater all the while to free it up.

I'll have to have another look at it in the near future.

It's certainly worth a go with the Mr Muscle, as otherwise I don't see much point spending the best part of £200 having the turbo off and cleaned, when a recon unit can be had for £400 fitted. I say that with the mileage of the turbo in mind rather than anything else.

Actually looking around a bit, you hear differing reports if you can actually recon garrett turbo's. Looks like there is a PDF out there saying they don't sell genuine spares to recon with. That's going to require some more digging and kind of adds to why it's worth having a go at reviving this one.

like i say, it WILL work, the passat had exact same symptoms, exact same engine. cured and been fine ever since. Just give it at least 2 hours in there, going in where exhaust comes of is a good idea, regular actuater pumping is crucial.

Keep us posted mate, on the guide thread if you will, it gives others confidence to try it

I'd be very surprised if you could get a recon unit fitted for that price. There's a good few hours of labour and parts to renew (oil feed, bolts, gaskets etc). Would say you're looking at a minimum £200 labour and £50-£100 in associated parts, plus the unit itself.

Limp in 5th & 6th sounds like an overboost is being registered, as the turbo's having a hard time producing the boost at those speeds, in that gear. I'd suspect the VNT mech as being the primary culprit here too.

It's an overboost.

As for the price, that was what I was quoted for an exchange recon unit. I've got some digging to do first as I'd be looking at getting it done properly rather than doing it cheap then paying again.. and again... and again etc.

Another option of course would be to get mine reconditioned on a parts only basis. At which point you can have it converted to 360 thrust bearings or dual ball bearings in place of the thrust bearings. Both of which should help with reliability.

did mine 80k ago, never a bother since! as ive said many a time - its a fix for the issue

I meant I'd give the Mr M a go and if that doesn't work, then there's little point taking it apart.

ah yes, i see now. Wish i was closer dude, id have popped round and done it for you. too far though -are you?

Unless you're down in wilts or somerset area or within a short drive of it (which you're not) then it's far too far for you to come or for me to go either, as the costs soon add up.

yup, 4-500 miles that
