Servicing update - Oil and Spark plugs.

Featured Replies

I went to TPS at Lincoln to get some bits for my car as it was due a service. It would appear that VAG is now moving to 5w 40 oil and not 5w 30 anymore, as that is what the Platinum oil is now as standard. It also has additives to help prevent oil deposits from builing up so you dont have to use oil flush when changing the oil.

Also I purchased some spark plugs and was expecting to get the NGK PFR7S8EG. However they have moved back to Bosch and the Bosch plugs are also now a step colder. They do offer the NGK as an alternative but I believe the Bosch plug is better made. The Bosch plug part number is FR 5 KPP 332 S. The 5 represents the heat range as the old Bosch plugs were 6. Bosch use the lower the number the colder the plug. Where as NGK go up the number range for colder plugs. The VW part code is still 06H 905 611.

Interesting. I thought that 5W40 was for standard annual service regime and 5W30 was for extended. What spec is the 5W40? Is it still VW504/507 or is it VW502? Also what sort of price is the oil and the plugs? ( Im' interested as I work for a Motor factors) I wonder if the colder plugs are to improve cold start???

Forgot to mention above, I have read a few posts of people using 5W40 to reduce oil consumption on the TFSI engine.

ive never had what i would call excessive oil consumption but its the first car ive had use oil ever and ive had bmw and vag diesels.

I'm changing mine to 5w40 next week using fuchs done it this time last year and never used a drop of oil so i think thats my way forward :)

5w30 is longlife 5w40 is fixed for Petrol's anyway.

the only reason they would change from ngk to bosch is the price that vag are buying them for plain and simple. or the fact bosch is german and so is vag, but thats a whole other topic.

You are confused.

As long as I can remember, Quantum Platinum has always been 5W-40. It is a standard synthetic suitable only for annual regime. It is 5W-40 as its their original 505.01 (PD) compliant oil. Although they claim that Platinum is a low ash oil, their product sheet clearly state it must not be used in vehicles with DPF - which means its not really a low ash oil.

All dealers should now use 504.00/507.00 compliant oil in their servicing regardless of variable or fixed annual regime. This is a "longlife" spec - the equivalent Quantum Oil is Quantum Longlife III - and is 5W/30 and used for petrol and diesel models alike.

AFAIK TPS are not connected in any way to VAG. They are a independent supplier of VAG group parts and aftermarket parts to independent garages..

The spark plugs they supply are not VW group parts (i.e. OE). They will offer OE quality alternatives like NGK or Bosch, but what they offer is dependent on what they can source the cheapest.

Sometimes dealers will cut corners in servicing and use non VAG direct sourced parts or cheaper oil - eg Platinum, you are being shortchanged if they do. If I haggle on price, thats what my local dealers do.

Nasty.

Actually TPS parent company is VW and they do supply genuine VAG parts that are used on the original equipment manufacture. Thats why I use them as they are a lot cheaper than going to the a main dealer for the same part.

The Bosch plugs help my car start on the first turn rather than the few turns it would take with the NGK Iridiums. From now on I'm sticking with the OEM items, as they work better on the car.

Your answers are so misinformed its unreal mate.

For the long life service or variable service it should be Quantum longlife III which is 5W/30. Even on fixed servicing the TPS oil finder on the site still recommends Quantum longlife III this is for the Tsi & TFSI vrs models. I have linked to the oil finder just put in your reg.

Also according to the Quantum platinum 5w/40 data sheet it ain't suitable for variable servicing.

No need to be so nasty grizzle. I did say AFAIK, and I stand corrected.

However I stand by what I say about the oils.

I also think genuine VW group spark plugs have VW Audi branding on them - I have seen them. OK they may be made by Bosch,NGK,Beru and whatever in reality, but VAG spec their service items, mutisource and brand them as their own.

I checked with my dealer yesterday on what oil to use. I was informed to use 5W-30 Fully Synthetic. This is 507.00 approved. I have a 2.0 Tdi PD vRS.

They sell 5 Litres for £50 including VAT or 1 Litre for £15 inlcuding VAT.

They also told me to use G13 Coolant (Purple Cap) and charge £10.46 + VAT.

Anyone know cheaper places to buy the same spec products?

Eurocarparts using BRISK25 discount code.

Some Skoda dealerships don't use TPS unless they have too. My dad could source parts for me using TPS cheaper than ordering from Skoda but they don't have the same profit margin as selling from Skoda Uk.
